Critical - Multiply or Roll Again?

Do you multiply criticals or roll them?

  • I multiply! 2nd Edition hold over or not it's what I like

  • I roll [insert enthuiasm for rolling crits here]

Bah! Rolling 6d4+2d6+1d8+1d10 when you hit a critical sneak attack with your thundering flaming burst Scythe is what it's all about!

Handfuls of dice! Woo hoo!

I have to agree with dead_radish.

More dice is a Good Thing. Multiplying is nowhere near as much fun as making everybody wait while you count up pips.

Normally it's only casters who get to roll lots of dice. Fighters deserve a chance to add up lots of numbers too!

Multiplying causes a subtle shift in the balance of the game. As the DMG suggests, increasing or enhancing randomness will play against the PCs in the long term. Multiplying would make picks and waraxes pretty damn 'exciting' to fight with or against!

Wouldn't that be 8d4 + 2d6 + 3d10 + 1d8?

(scythe 2d4, x4 crit = 8d4, 2d6 from the sneak attack I presume, and then 3d10 from the flaming burst since it is a x4 crit weapon)

Assuming no strength or other damage multpliers that is, what, 14-82 damage?

Cheers

More about rolling

We roll, as that is in the PHB.
However, another part of it is open to ambivalent interpretation.

simple question, if my weapon does 1d8+4 (2 STR, 2 Spec) and I score a crit (say a x3). What do I roll?

3d8 + 4?
Or 3d8 + 12?

I didn't think there was any ambiguity at all - you roll the 1d8+4 three times, for 3d8+12. Any bonus dice damage (sneak attack, flaming etc) are then added in without multiplying.

We roll.

We roll.

We roll.

We roll.

But no one will roll
With us
In this zany town.

Chim chim chim sing us all a praise for your elders
They're in the back...
Pick out some D20 dice
For your campaign, man
Check that expiration date, Jim,
It's later than you think.

etc. etc.

Sorry, I've been "clobbered," per the DMG variant.
