Critical Role Critical Role Campaign 4 Episode One +

As for the actual episode.

Wow, that was a lot.

Looks like, paladins are very well represented.

Anyone know how they generated stats? The numbers seem REALLY high.

Sam's playing a cleric with a WIS of 10 but CHA of 18. Interesting challenge if WIS will be the spellcasting stat.
Weirdly high stats have been a common feature of Critical Role, I think basically since the beginning. I don’t know if they’ve ever said how they’re generated, but I kind of assumed they roll and can reroll as much as they want until they get a set they’re happy with.

I’d assume Thimble’s 3 Strength was just set that way because of her being so small.

EDIT: Some google searching informs me that Matt Mercer used 4d6 drop lowest 6 times, reroll the whole set if the total is less than 70, assign as you like. No idea if Brendan is using the same system though.

I thought we’d be learning who was in what subgroup (soldiers/seekers/schemers) in the first episode, but honestly I don’t feel any more confident in my guesses about who’s in which than I did before the episode…
Yeah. I think the two paladin types, Travis's and his friend, seem like they will end up in the same group. And the two that hate each other seem unlikely to group, but I'm not sure about the rest at this point.

I will say this, though, the DM was decently good, but his constant "ums" and "uhs" were driving me crazy. Hopefully that dies down as the group downsizes into separate groups of play.

Yeah, I have been assuming Travis would be a soldier since before the characters were revealed, and nothing I saw last night has made me change my mind about that. I’d bet that Luis (the other paladin’s player) is one too. Robbie (the ranger) could also be, based on him being a member of the group the other two fought together in with Thiazi, but I could also see him being a Seeker given how hard they laid on that he’s a really good investigator/tracker. Laura I had assumed would be a schemer just given her play style preferences in previous campaigns, but Thimble was stressed to be a very capable combatant and also fought alongside Thiazi, so maybe Soldier. Especially if she wants to be in the same group as her husband. Might be more logistically convenient for them that way. Matt’s character seems soldier-like, but given his animosity with Thiazi I’m having a hard time picturing him in a group with anyone, except Ashley’s character and maybe Taliessen’s. Maybe they could be the schemers and it’s just a smaller group? Or maybe Sam and Whitney could be in that group too, since they’re also not very popular with Thiazi’s friends and family. But, apart from Travis and Luis being soldiers I really have no confidence in these guesses.

My best guess based on what we've seen thus far:

Soldiers - Travis, Luis, Robbie, Laura
Schemers - Matt, Taliesin, Ashley, Whitney, and maybe Sam?
Seekers: Liam, Marisha, Aabria, and Alex (Maybe Sam if they split up Wick and Tyranny.)

Yeah, this seems like a pretty solid guess. Interesting party spreads if true! We’ve got…

Two paladins (one of whom is multiclassed with sorcerer), a rogue, and a ranger for the soldiers. Strong DPS and some healing capabilities, but very limited AoE potential. Though the ranger and partial sorcerer do bring a little of that, so it’s probably fine.

Two warlocks, a wizard, a paladin, a fighter/rogue, and maybe a cleric for the Schemers. Squishy-looking party, but maybe that won’t be a problem since they will tend to be more focused on social interaction than combat. And if they do end up in any fights, at least they have good firepower. Sam would bring some extra survivability via healing if he’s part of that group, otherwise it’d all be on one paladin… unless Tyranny is a Celestial warlock I guess, at which point I think they’d be a surprisingly robust group.

Two wizards, a bard, a druid, and maybe a cleric for the Seekers is a ton of magic and zero frontliners, but again, combat isn’t their main focus so that might not actually be a problem. In fact, lots of magical utility is exactly what you’d want for a lore hunting focused group. It is a small group though, unless Sam is part of it. I kind of wonder if Taliesin might actually be a Seeker, because with his sky-high bonuses in Arcana and Religion, he’s likely to be well-suited to passing the knowledge checks I would expect such a group to frequently be needing to make. And maybe it’s recency bias, but his reaction to “I’ll give you two out of three between the target, the cause, and the effect” makes me feel like he really wants to be learning all the secrets he can.

Apparently they used 5d6 drop 2 for this
