Critical Role will continue to use Dungeons & Dragons as the play system for its upcoming campaign, with the cast expanding to three distinct tables consisting of a total of 13 players. Today, Critical Role announced new details about its new campaign, which is set to air on October 4th. The new campaign will feature the full founding cast members as players, alongside several new players. In total, the cast includes Laura Bailey, Luis Carazo, Robbie Daymond, Aabria Iyengar, Taliesin Jaffe, Ashley Johnson, Matthew Mercer, Whitney Moore, Liam O’Brien, Marisha Ray, Sam Riegel, Alexander Ward, and Travis Willingham, with the previously announced Brennan Lee Mulligan serving as GM.

The campaign itself will be run as a "West Marches" style of campaign, with three separate groups of players exploring the world. The groups are divided into gameplay styles, with a combat-focused Soldiers group, a lore/exploration-focused Seekers group, and a intrigue-focused Schemers group. All three groups will explore the world of Araman, created by Mulligan for the campaign.

Perhaps most importantly, Critical Role will not be switching to Daggerheart for the fourth campaign. Instead, they'll be opting for the new 2024 ruleset of Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition. Daggerheart will be represented at Critical Role via the Age of Umbra and "other" Actual Play series, as well as partnerships with other Actual Play troupes.

This campaign sounds amazing. For those worried about Daggerheart, I wouldn't be. The system is solid, they will continue to promote it, and in a few years once it's had time to mature as a system, they may switch over entirely. But DH wouldn't be able to handle a production like this right now, and I'm thrilled they didn't try and force it.

They said they are doing BOTH for Campaign 4 (not just in reference to their other ongoing projects like Age of Umbra 2). They also said they are going to have a 4 episode overview of the world where we meet all the characters, then split into three different tables: Soldiers, Seekers and Schemers.

One of those tables could be Daggerheart (it would satisfy the odd BOTH statement).

This isn't correct. They said they were doing both, but not for Campaign four. Campaign four is D&D (2024 rules). The "both" applies to Age of Umbra and other content.

No. That's not what was said. CR as a company will still be doing actual plays of D&D and Daggerheart. Campaign 4 is pure D&D.

I love the idea of West Marches for live play, but it doesn't sound like the players will be mingling. Rather they'll be at one table throughout based on playstyle.

Really disappointed they're sticking with D&D.

Believe you misunderstood their announcement. They will not be doing just D&D but the 4th Campaign will be D&D.

To quote Matt, "Will still be nerdy ass voice actors playing dungeons and dragons."
It's entirely possible I misunderstood. It was an odd statement, and I've rewatched it over and over and they definitely say "Both." But I wouldn't know how they could do that without things being very weird. Maybe they are just including all their side projects under the umbrella of Campaign 4. That would technically satisfy the term "Both."
