Pg. 52 of the PHB (v3.5, nat) notes that "only a normal, unmodified animal may become a familiar. Thus, a druid/sorcerer can't use her animal companion as a familiar."
However, both critters are considered "magical beasts." A familiar starts as a normal critter and becomes a magical beast, while a druid's companion "is treated as a magical beast, not an animal" from the git-go (PHB pg. 36).
So while a druid could not expect his animal companion to become a familiar if he multiclassed later as a wizard, isn't it possible for a wizard's familiar to become an animal companion if he multiclassed later as a druid?
((Yeah, yeah, yeah ... I know: It looks like I'm violating the *spirit* of the rules, if not the specific wording. Still, though -- something to think about. Not expressly forbidden.))
Duplicate critter duty aside, I've got a second question with more legitimacy: What sort of relationship would a familiar and animal companion have if both belonged to the same multiclass character? Do they have a different outlook on life and their service to the druid/wizard? Would an animal companion owl and a familiar owl get along, for example?
