Crossroads of Twilight

You know, that's a pretty significant spoiler just thrown out there without warning. Someone blurted that same thing out in front of me right after the book came out, and it made it far less enjoyable.

Sorry, did not really think about it as the book can out in 1998.

Jeez guys, calm down. What exactly is so bad about Egwene?

I'm thinking back and I get a picture of realistic characters that have built up over time. Sure they make a lot of mistakes. Egwene is, as has been noted in the books, trying to learn 50 years of being Amyrlin Seat in 6 months, or whatever. She's got enough of her own troubles without Rand being involved too.

Anyway, enough of me starting a raging argument on here, let's stick to the basics. Is Jordan going to carry on dropping new plot threads on us, or is he finally going to start wrapping things up and moving towards a climax? That's the real question!

I see your point, but I have always found it strange that Egwene goes from farmgirl to Aes Sedai in 3.5 seconds. The boys, despite their importance in the grand scheme, have retained some of their "simple farmer" qualities. Egwene goes to the White Tower for a few months, and suddenly it's the only thing she cares about in the world.

Now, Cadsuane on the other hand, would make a great Amyrlin.

But that goes all the way back to the beginning of the story. The boys don't want to be heroes, they don't want the responsibility that's been thrust upon them. Rand and Perrin accept it mostly out of a sense of responsiblity. Mat is the most resistant of the three, and still tends to resist how things have changed, but even he is beginning to accept it.

Egwene OTOH, openly embraced becoming an Aes Sedai. Once she learned she could channel, that what she wanted. I think she'll end up being one of the greatest Amyrlins in the entire history of the Tower.

However, she'd probably refuse it.

No disagreement here. That's precisely why I've never quite trusted her. And while I'm sure she will be one the greatest Amyrlins in history (after all, she's from the Two Rivers, which means she's ubermensch in Jordan's world), I don't know if I've seen the qualities first hand. That whole "martial law" thing was clever, I guess.

It was very clever. She's going to get more and more clever as we go along. I've read the start of the new book, and it's looking like some interesting things are happening.

I just hope he really gets on with it...

(my emphasis).

Hmmm...

"We're a bunch of smart-a**ed girls who have managed to get ourselves imprisoned by the forces evil, and they will probably be killing us shortly. Oh, look, here's one of the guys come to rescue us. Let's abuse him and tell him how useless he is. And look, he just puts up with it too!"

Back onto the topic of how the series will end (assuming it does...).

The bad guys will have to win. While they bicker amongst themselves, they at least know when to submit to authority. And if The Lord of All Evil (been ages, can't remember his name) appoints one of the Forsaken as his chosen, they'll have no choice but to obey.

OTOH, the "good" guys will never, ever stop their infighting. Proving that you are superior to your spouse/childhood friend/travelling companion/rescuer/ally etc... always takes precedence over actually opposing the bad guys.
