Crowdfunding News – Terra Oblivion, Ngolo Diaspora, and more

In this article, I share RPG Kickstarters that end by July 16th. This week, I focus on projects that speak to me from Khepera Publishing, MVmedia Philip Reed Games, and more. Unfortunately, that means hits like The Black Hack Second Edition - Classic Monsters from Gold Piece Publications and 5th Edition Monsters & Treasure of Aihrde from Troll Lord Games were linked instead of given short previews. Despite that, game listed here is worth checking out.

The colonists soon discover things are different here: the world is alive and taking resources requires something to be given in return. This time, humanity is literally killing the planet. The Book of Dungeon Encounters, for use with Fantasy RPGs from Philip Reed Games
  • END DATE: Thu, July 9 2020 4:01 PM EDT.
  • SYSTEM(S): System neutral
  • PROJECT TYPE: Sourcebook
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $1 for the PDF
  • NOTE: I have an interview with Phil Reed coming up here at EN World
“A collection of 100 different dungeon encounters that gamemasters can use with almost any fantasy roleplaying game. The Book of Dungeon Encounters is a 48-page 8.5" x 11" saddle-stitched book that is packed with 100 different dungeon encounter ideas. These are for use with almost any fantasy RPG, especially old-school RPGs that use square grids for combat, though imaginative gamemasters will no doubt find ways to adapt everything detailed within these pages to any system, including those that use hexes for combat maps. The book is presented as a giant d100 table, giving the gamemaster 100 different encounter ideas that can either be randomly rolled or selected to construct a dungeon. 90 of the encounters are presented as descriptions only -- no maps -- and range from low-level fights against dungeon beasties all of the way to strange gateways that lead to other worlds. Ten of the encounters include square grid maps that were created using the SkeletonKey Games 2e Adventure Tiles.”

Each of the 6 men wears a uniform, colored red and black with gold trim. An intimidatingly large Irish Wolfhound, with a gold collar, follows the tall man faithfully. The tall man heads towards the crowded bar. He is a man of wealth, status, and privilege, known as the Collector. When he wants something, he gets it, by any means necessary. And you have something that he wants. How will your players react when they find out that a rich and powerful man is after their most prized possession? And to what lengths will they go to get it back?”

Inn between Worlds from Texas in August Studio :fate:
  • END DATE: Thu, July 16 2020 8:42 AM EDT.
  • SYSTEM(S): Fate
  • PROJECT TYPE: Core rulebook
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $30 for the PDF and printed versions
“An RPG supplement about an inn and tavern that sit on damage to reality. It's like the Bermuda Triangle with a front desk. You don’t just use the inn between worlds as an occasional base between adventures. It is a home to adventures. The taverns and inns play an important part of RPGs is long established. For the most part, after party meets and works out their next adventure, inns and taverns are neglected. This is a pity. There is a lot of potential for adventure with an inn and a tavern. Inn between Worlds is my effort at making the place a home to adventures. The Inn between Worlds also provides seven new powers or stunts, five new monsters, 12 NPCs, tables for encounters and plot hooks. It also has a new subsystem, which helps a gaming group design their own version of the hotel or inn-and-tavern. So, the GM can use the predesigned version that comes with the book, or the group can design their own unique take on the place.”

Interesting, Philip Reed is using for his Kickstarter's book cover the same cover that is in use for Mythras Classic Fantasy.

The Design Mechanism

Oh and I love the idea for "Inn Between Worlds", just am not a fan of the Fate system. :/ Anyhow, as usual I appreciate the crowdfunding news article Egg. Keep up the good work.

Edit: Also, is it just me or are Kickstarter "layouts" getting more confusing in recent months? I looked at getting Phil's but the pretty confusing on how to just snag it all sort of scenario like I like to do. His isn't the first one I've come across lately where I had a hard time trying to figure out what was what. Maybe I'm finally hitting early dementia. (shrugs)

Inn between Worlds is my project. Thank you Egg for including it here.

The book has actually been written for both Savage Worlds and Fate. I actually prefer Savage Worlds. But I could not get an Ace license, so I could not give out backer copies during a Kickstarter. That would count as a sales. Without a Ace license, the only approved sales are through the PEG section of DriveThru.

I will also be releasing a Savage Worlds version.

Don't forget Steve Jackson Games' GURPS 2020 PDF Challenge, running through July 13.

The GURPS team, under the direction of GURPS Line Editor Sean Punch, has prepared a dozen different PDFs . . . and this is your chance to possibly grab all twelve of the new PDFs for only $3!

Starting with the latest expansion to the GURPS Action series (see Warehouse 23), your pledge of $3 secures you a PDF copy of GURPS Action 6 - Tricked Out Rides. This 10-page PDF, written by Sean Punch, is a quick-and-dirty toolkit for adventures where sports cars pack more gadgetry than fighter jets, and miniguns fit behind headlights!

One new PDF is great, but the project gets more exciting for all of the backers as stretch goals are unlocked. With each unlocked stretch goal (see below), we'll add another one of the twelve new PDFs to your rewards . . . that $3 pledge becomes an even better deal as more backers join the campaign.

Six of the twelve PDFs have already been unlocked, and it's only the first day of the campaign.

I can't forget it, @philreed won't let me! :p

It's a common practice for many publishers. Briefly, I write about the use of stock art and reusing the same stock art for the covers of different books at d20 Radio. In that article, I look at the reuse of a piece by Tithi Luadthong as the cover for at least three projects.

As expectations rise alongside costs, it's not shocking that more and more small publishers are using stock art for projects. So long as the artists can continue to make a living producing new stock art, we'll be just fine.

The challenge for publishers is to find ways to make their work -- even with stock art -- stand out from the pack. It's something I think about constantly.

Provided the artwork being used is owned by Philip Reed, I'm not bothered by him reusing artwork for a PDF that I'm paying $1 for. It's tremendous value at that price with no artwork at all.

I paid the cost to license/use the artwork, and I include the artist's appropriate legal designation in the material.

(Also, in this particular instance, the artist shared my project on Facebook with his friends, so I think I'm all good.)

This is true. In a few months, I'll share an article about how I attempted just that, make a public domain piece of art into a unique cover. @philreed, do you mind if I quote that entire post in the article? It summarizes my thinking on the subject perfectly. (No pressure either way. ;-) )

Just to be clear, I had no doubt that you had permission or licence to use the image. I was just pointing out that I had no issue with the artwork not being brand new for this book.
