D&D 5E Crystal Ball: A year in, how do you think 5E will unfold going forward?

I was all dark about the lack of released content until I read princes. That plus the free players guide has a lot of content in it. You don't technically have to even like APs to get a lot out of it.

Sucks if you like splat books, mechanics and builds, but there's always PF for that.

I disagree on the content part. There isn't enough there if you like more than minimum. I don't like splat, and builds, and bloat, but I do like options and heavy content. In my opinion, Princes is just another mediocre AP.

I honestly no longer know.
I originally thought we'd get a new themed sourcebook with each storyline, but that expectation went out the window. I also expected one sourcebook every year, but they could surprise us and not even do that.

Two storylines a year with a free PDF of content varying depending on the storyline. I think we'll see fewer races this time (maybe just kobolds and goblins) but also some more subclasses and maybe a background or two. Or not.

This year could be almost anything.
It's unlikely we'll see psionics, as that will likely be playtested publically. I expect that next year in 2016. At the earliest.
For this year's GenCon I expect a Forgotten Realms book. It's needed and people are curious. But this might also take longer than six months, so it might come out much later. Making a setting book is a lot of work...
It's too soon for a second monster book. We need more time to use what we have and see how current monsters handle. A second monster book should be more like the 4e MM3 where the math is tighter and abilities improved.
Or they could just release the adventure. It could happen. They might not have anything else.

I expect the OGL is dead. It's been too long, which means it just isn't a priority for the people at WotC or Hasbro. The window of relevance for it has passed, so even if it comes out all the 3PP who had been planning books would have moved onto other projects or worked around the lack of a licence and produced stuff using the 3e OGL.
It'll be a long time before anything useful emerges.

It's also too soon to see what will happen with Dragon+. They might do some cool stuff with the app, or they might just slowly cease updating as it ceases to be a priority, no longer being new and not being a source of revenue.

I don't like splat....but I do like options and heavy content.

Uh...the second part of your sentence is close to the definition of the first part of your sentence, which you said you don't like. What is it you think splat means, if it's not options and heavy content?

OK, this is weird. You said the same thing in the other thread. In response, I directly asked Mike Mearls (two days ago). I got a reply, he said it's not dead but still in the works. And so...you repeat it's dead? So do you think Mike Mearls is lying, or just delusional, or he's just suffering from wishful thinking about his own business, or what? I mean, I don't think it's impossible for your view to be compatible with what he said...but how do you just repeat it without even attempting to address what he said in response to your very own post just a couple days ago concerning the same topic?

WotC's D&D department will cease any actual game design, and will exist only to manage the D&D brand. They will publish 2ish TRPG products per year (licensed to companies that actually make TRPG stuff), which portray only core D&D IP, and will serve mostly as marketing for all their multimedia projects.

The OGL is sort of irrelevant, since third-parties are already making products to fill the void. Nearly all of these products are garbage, and I don't see how an OGL would fix that.

Lol. Have you actually read it?

It's not actually an AP. It's a sandbox with a ton of independent adventures in it.

It also has a few new magic items, quite a lot of new NPCs, and even a few side quests that can be used anywhere.

That combined with the new races and a TON of new spells equates to a ton of new content.

Sitting right here looking at it and my opinion of it hasn't changed.

You and I aren't thinking of the same thing then. I don't see options and content as splat.

If you think it is splat then there should be no options what so ever.
