Crystal Shards

DM2

First Post
Hi All,

I am sure it has been gone over long before now, but does Crystal Shards ignore DR? My understanding from months ago (took a break from D&D) was that any magical effects ignore DR.

If so, this is a great spell for my kineticist. It won't have the utility of Energy Ray, but will be very nice against creatures with Power Resistance, etc.

Thanks,

DM2

Damage Reduction does not apply to Crystal Shard, or any spell/power that does a physical damage type. I'm trying to think which issue of dragon that was answered in. Either the current issue, or the one before it. So it should be in the next faq update.

I appreciate the post. My DM wouldn't care if I went to him 3 levels from now and said my assumptions about shards was wrong, mind if I respec my power choices a bit, but I'd rather get some things right from the beginning here.

There are arguements for both sides of the debate in this matter. Depending on how you read various parts of the rules it really could go either way.

From a balance point of view (from games I have been in) they should not be subject to DR. They already take a good amount of pp to be able to use at all and so any amount of DR cuts into their damage 'very' quicly.

But of course one may be able to make the opposite comparison from the point of view of much higher levels (when the games I am talking about got that high they were useing other powers so it didnt come up).
