Cthulthu Tech...

Don't get caught up in the title. It's got Lovecraftian window dressing, but it's really an anime-inspired action RPG. In fact, it's basically a Guyver/Neon Genesis Avengelion/Macross RPG, and any Lovecraft found in it is because of the Lovecraftian influences of those anime series.

Macross? Where the heck do you get that?

I don't see Cthulhu or the Migo being swayed by the power of pop music and love.

The Guyver and EVA influences are pretty obvious, but I see nothing Macross like in the game at all.

The 'influences' section of the core rulebook?

They list Robotech, but again, just because they list an influence doesn't mean it's actually there.

Let's see.

Variable Fighters: Nope. Well, I suppose they might be in a later source book I don't have, but still I feel confident on this.

Military victories are inherently Pyhrric: Well, all victories in the Aeon War are Pyrrhic, but there's no other sort really. I doubt any sort of peace could be reached with the Miguo, Rapine Storm, Dagon, etc. At least, none that we'd like.

Music can change the world and end the war: Yeah, I somehow doubt this. Certainly not in the positive sense that Macross presents it. I certainly don't see the 'enemy' sitting in their barracks sighing dreamily listening to the NEG's latest idol.

Love Triangles involving pilots and singers: I suppose this is a play style issue.

Lilly Marlene: Nope.

Giant transforming space carriers: Unless I missed it somewhere, nope again.

Guyver, Eva, Blue Gender, Akira, even Bubblegum Crisis and A.D. Police... I can see all of those. But Macross? Not so much. Despite the inspiration section, none of what they list for Super Dimensional Fortress Macross, Genesis Climber MOSEPEDA, or Super Dimensional Cavalry Southern Cross fit with anything shown in the books or have anything to do with Lovecraft.

I dug through the rule books once, and I noticed that there's two effective scales of mecha, the eva like type, and the normal machine type. The normal machine type must what the macross reference is. Also I noticed that the various scales of characters won't work well together-a mecha pilot won't mesh with a sorcerer or a Guyver type thing. It seemed to me at the time that you'd have to limit the options to stuff that would work together.

If you intend to use the Esoteric Order of Dagon, I would highly recommend reading the HPL story “Shadow Over Innsmouth”.

Even if you’re not actually using Innsmouth proper in your chronicle, I would also reference the Call of Cthulhu supplements “Before the Fall” (focusing on pre-FBI-invasion Innsmouth), and “Escape from Innsmouth”. Both have really useful backtground ideas and story hooks.

And, in the “Nocuturnum” saga, there’s also a cool sequence you could pillage where the Investigators are stranded on an off-shore platform when Dagon and his deep-ones attack. (At least it conjured up some pretty inspiring imaginary visual for me and my group!!)

(As you can tell, the few sessions I've payed/run, we tended to focus more on the "Mythos" side of things, as opposed to the true "Sci-fi" end, but that's really just a matter of personal taste.)

Thats how we are handling it. You largely choose to play a faction based on what kind of game you want. So we started off with Engels and being Engel pilots.

If you want to play or more classic "investigation" type you can definitely do that as well. Maybe even interweave them with Tagers, or not.

There are two main themes to this setting, in your face all out war of survival, or the shadow wars behind closed doors and in secret.

So in this some where you can be any "common" type human left, or you can be a Mech pilot in the sense of Macross or Gundam, or you can be an Engel pilot similar to Evangelion, or you can bond yourself with a cosmic being and become a Tager, if you live through it. There are also para psychics, sorcerors, and even alien races. So tons of options in this setting.

Yeah, there is "Macross influences" in that there is small to giant mecha in here, but beyond that I see far more influences from Neon Genesis Evangelion and HP Lovecraft. They definitely pulled from a lot of influences, but I would agree Macross influences are pretty small, especially in comparison to others.
