What's up with the Necronomicon? It mentioned some old Sumarian gods, but it wasn't all-terrifying... Does it tie in with these vicious fiends?

The Necronomicon, the "real" one, was a Greek translation of Al Azif, a series of poems, prophecies and spells written by the mad Arab Abdul Alhazred, who was supposedly torn apart by invisible demons shortly after writing it. The Necronomicon is rumored to contain spells to bring the dead back to life and to summon either the Great Old Ones and their servitors, and contains the couplet:

"That which is not dead that can eternal lie,
And in strange aeons, even death may die"

Which is usually associated with Cthulhu's imprisonment in R'lyeh.

The Necronomicons you can find in a store are generally attempts to cash in on Lovecraft's fictional tome.

Demiurge out.

No, you're thinking about the Disney Cartoon, "The Little Mermaid" where the guy rams a ship into Queen Ursula's gut.

No, he's thinking of Lovecraft's story The Call of Cthulhu, where someone killed Cthulhu -- temporarily -- by running a ship through him :)

That's the one where the ship's propellers basically ruptured his head like an overinflated sac, yes?

It was a limited license from day one. WotC obtained the rights to publish the main CoC d20 rule book and a few supplements, but nothing further. Only Chaosium can say why the license was set up like this, as they were the ones doing the licensing, but the limitations of the license itself were announced at the same time as WotC's procurement of said license.

Don't forget that Call of Cthulhu spawned some of the best campaigns for RPGs that have ever been published, like the ever famous "Masks of Nyarlathotep".
