Cubicle 7 Announces New Horus Heresy RPG for Warhammer

Get ready to explore one of Warhammer 40K's biggest events.

Cubicle 7 is expanding their line of Warhammer TTRPGs with a new RPG set during the Horus Heresy. During last week's Warhammer Relics announcement event, Cubicle 7 announced that they were developing a new Horus Heresy RPG, set to launch in 2026. The Horus Heresy is one of the defining events of Warhammer 40K lore, and saw the famous Space Marine legions of the Imperium of Man engage in a bloody civil war. The Horus Heresy ended with the mortal wounding of the Emperor, which led to him being placed inside a massive supercomputer sarcophagus known as the Golden Throne, and led to the extreme stagnation of the Imperium that lasts until the present day.

One notable twist in this new RPG is that players will create two characters - a primary character that acts as a Consul within a Space Marine corps, and a secondary character that holds a specialty occupation. Players can swap between characters when their respective particular skills are needed.

Pre-orders for The Horus Heresy: The Roleplaying Game will start this summer, with a core rulebook and starter kit going on sale in 2026.

I mean thats a way, but I feel there is a LOT of the best material being missed there.
Such as? I know Legion, First Heretic, and Master of Mankind have good reviews. Just today I graduated from Flight of the Eisenstein to Fulgrim and it was SUCH a relief. The first bit of Fulgrim is just about some artists but it's palpably better written than Eisenstein was.

Know no fear (also by Abnett) and Betrayer by ADB are also very strong.

I felt the same, but I just recently started reading the HH novels and Horus Rising by Dan Abnett was genuinely great. False Gods by Graham Mcneil was also pretty good, as is Fulgrim so far (also by Mcneil). I think you pretty much read the first five and the last five and skip the rest, but Abnett in particular is excellent.

I expect this RPG will be ass though,
I remain hopeful about the RPG :)

Legion was decent, and pretty foundational.
First Heretic and Master of Mankind are required reading, same with Betrayer.
Everything Chris Wraight wrote, should be read.
Know no Fear is central, but I wouldn't read anything but the very last book by Abnett otherwise.

I would not read the first 2 volumes of The End and the Death, it's Abnett at his most outrageously selfish, self indulging, no editor in sight, or anything involving the Salamanders lol.

Yeah, there’s definitely some duds or nothing books along the way. Eisenstein, Nemesis, the two early Dark Angels books, the Salamanders mini-arc culminating in Deathfire, Battle for the Abyss, Fear to Tread, just to name a few. Even End And The Death parts 2 and 3 didn’t really work for me. Natural hazard of a series so big with so many authors (and which I suspect was expanded wildly beyond its original scope once GW realised what a goldmine they had). And I have all the usual gripes about my favourite Legions getting my least favourite authors (Dark Angels and Raven Guard, thought at least the World Eaters did ok).

But on the other hand there was so much great stuff like Horus Rising, Know No Fear, Betrayer, the Wolves/Thousand Sons duology, Scars/Path of Heaven, Saturnine, Legion, and many others.

It was worth it for me, but I’m a very fast reader and I’ve been following the series for many years. Starting on it now would be a daunting prospect, and the 2nd hand prices of some of the books would make it prohibitive if you don’t do ebooks.

I loved Eisenstein. I thought the change of pace and the characters were excellent.

On a separate note I love what C7 do but I really do feel like they are falling into the same trap as FFG. Releasing multiple games systems with fairly minimal variances that have similarities but aren’t really compatible. It doesn’t encourage a dedicated fan base.

I’m lucky that the run on 4e has been a really good one and we’ve had circa 25+ products. I have enough to set me up for the next 10 years of gaming. But I really do worry for some of the spin offs.

I would love to know how much of this is being mandated by GW and how much of it is because it’s easier to release core rules than sustain a product line.

I've just started on my HH reading journey.
I've cobbled together this list from various forum posts and YT videos on both reading order and "must-read" novels in the series. Going by the GoodReads ratings, I seem to cover the good-stuff.
