My brother, who is a...

New England (i.e. yankee),
Vegetarian,
Agnostic,
Liberal,
Intellectual

has moved to Myrtle Beach South Carolina.

He is also a gamer. (Prefers 3.0 edition)

He seem to be having some trouble settling in.

Does anyone here have any advice or suggestions that would help him?

Honestly, he may want to move to larger city that has more of a job base. Myrtle is a touro-trap.

First, I am not planning on moving to the south. I did live outside of Houston Texas for a while where my complaint was "It's absurd that I can't find a decent bookstore near my house!" (I know that Texas is not South Carolina but they are more similar to each other than either is to Massachusetts.)

Second I am using the word Intellectual to mean someone who is intellegent but not pratical (studies like Art, Literature, and Phylosophy enrich the soul more than the pocket). I am sure that the south has it's share of people like that, but they do not seem to be the majority anywhere (including New England). If you want to feel insulted that I believe that Massachusetts may have more impratical people than South Carolina that is your prerogative.

He is in the wrong town, IMO. He would find a much better fit in either Charleston, SC or Wilmington, NC. In fact, I think he would find Charleston very appealing...good arts community, better chance of finding those politically inclined his way, etc.

Myrtle Beach, while a great place to vacation and golf, doesn't sound like a good fit for him. The population is fairly transient and/or seasonal and many jobs are designed to support tourism.

EDIT: Guess I should read the whole thread (points up). What BU said :p!

Are you sure it's a North-South thing and not a generational one? Aren't most residents of Myrtle Beach about 80 years old?

although Texas BBQ is better
What?! You mean there are still people out there who haven't learned that yet?

I think all the good advice has already been given. I was going to make some quip about people who describe themselves as intellectual, but it looks like that's already been sorted out.

I don't really have anything to add. :\

I do NOT concede the point.
Me, either. Mongolian BBQ FIRST, then Kelly's BBQ Pork (a brand available in the Midwest) grilled between bread slices like grilled cheese, then Eastern Carolina BBQ on a hamburger bun with a good slaw. Then Korean BBQ, then KC style.

Texas style comes in around #6 or 7. :p

Perhaps it is best that we just let this quietly drop while we're all still friends. ;)

Fixed that for you.
Hey, c'mon now; any region that doesn't have it's own regional breed of cow (I'll take pig in pinch, I guess, since pork BBQ works for me too) can't possibly be the best at BBQ.

Can't we all just get along?!
I am so quoting that for truth. :p
