Cure spells and metamagic

Re: Except...

Except when dealing with spontaneous casting. If a cleric wants to cast, say, a Silent aid spell, she must prepare it in advance. To cast, say, a Silent cure light wounds, she can use spontaneous casting and suffer the same metamagic-related time increase as would a sorcerer.

Yes, Mark that is true. However, "as the need arises" is not the same as "for spontaneuous casting of cure spells" :)

Oh, I (finally) see. You're just joking about dkilgo having said "whenever the time arises?"

Afraid it fell a bit flat, really.

Hey, I think that was a very appropriate statement!

Did you think that I was strictly talking about in combat?

No, but "when the time arises" can be very vaguely interpreted. :)

After all, if I'm a cleric in combat and suddenly see a frost giant walk into the room and wailing on my allies, I suddenly need my flame strike to do more damage, and hence the time/need has arisen.

Or even out of combat. Say we need to bust open a door, and the fighter needs a higher strength. Now, I may well need my Bull Strength to be empowered/maximized.

The two conditions are "as need arises" and "for spontaneous casting of cure spells". One encompasses the other, but also encompasses many other times as well. One is in the rules, one is not.

No, I was not joking. not really. I've seen very strange house rules, very reasonable ones, and very munchkin-building ones, so when I hear a DM lets his player's cleric use metamagic feats as the need arises, I'm not too shocked. Although, the one about the DM who ruled that a +1 keen sword is not magical presses the boounds. :D

It wasn't a joke, it was a misunderstanding, that's all. :( I haven't been here long enough to crack jokes at others. ;)

Cheers
