Curious about something: would you play in an AD&D campaign?

All things being equal, would you be willing to play in an AD&D 1e campaign?

  • Nah, not for me. I'm into other versions and won't look back.

I'll try anything at least once. I'd reserve the right to make sarcastic comments about crazy game design, and it certainly wouldn't be my first choice. But yeah, I'd give it a shot if I couldn't find anything else.

I'd be happy to play a game with first-edition feel, but I didn't like the first-edition rules, even when AD&D was (literally) the only game in town.

I like the fact that the old game was not narrowly defined, and you were expected to tackle open-ended problems without going down a list of clear options from your character sheet. On the other hand, it was still quite constrained in odd ways, including in combat, with the AC and hp mechanics making it hard, say, to hamstring a giant or chop off a goblin's spearhead as he poked it through a murder hole in the ceiling.

Probably not, in that I played very little AD&D back in the day.

I jumped from OD&D to 3e; I played a little AD&D, but didn't enjoy it. Instead, I played many other systems, such as RuneQuest and Ars Magica, instead. 3e brought me back and 4e sent me away again.

So thanks, but I think I'd rather run an OD&D game :)

I've never played 1e, so I don't know whether I would enjoy it or not. But I would out of simple curiosity.

I haven't read any of the 1e books, but if OSRIC is any indication reading it I always find my mind oscillating between man this is so cool, and I would so change that.

In a heartbeat!

I'm surprised that there are people who wouldn't play AD&D but would play Classic. I mean, I'm not surprised that they exist (my Classic DM is like that, too) but I just don't get it. The games aren't exactly the same, but they're kindred spirits.

OD&D and Classic are pretty close to "perfect games" for me. But I like games besides my "perfect" ones. AD&D is definitely likeable.

Well, I'd play AD&D but not Classic if I had to choose between the two.

I'd _prefer_ to not play either, though. I'd much rather either play D&D 3.5 or 4E.

I'd definitely have fun playing. When we decided to switch campaigns from 3.x and start a new one there was some serious consideration going with the Rules Cyclopedia. We ended up deciding to give 4e a chance and are having a lot of fun. It definitely has this olde tyme feel to the game for some reason for us.

Sure... if I liked the people I'd be gaming with. But I'd prefer it the group played AD&D the way it was meant to be played: houseruled to the point it's really the campaign's own unique game system.

Hell yeah! ^_^

3e is great and all, but I started with AD&D and I'm still more than happy to play in an AD&D game whenever one comes up that I'm available to play in. I don't remember enough of the rules well enough anymore to DM it, but I can still remember enough to play it with only occasional questions to fill in the forgotten bits and pieces.
