Curious error

So, I downloaded all the Windows patches on my computer and it promptly crashed. So I did a system restore, but now anytime I put anything on my desktop, I get two copies of it. Any thoughts?

Well, I seem to have tracked down the source of the problem, but I have no idea how to fix it.

There is a folder called "My Documents" on my desktop, and another called "My Documents" under the All Users. These two are identical, and whatever I put into one, goes into both. That includes the Desktop folder.

I just have no idea what to do about it.

Nevermind. I had that driver error that was causing my blue screen of death on start up again. Something in the Windows updates must be causing it. Anywho, I restored my system again, and at least that cleared up the desktop issue.

Just a note: in Windows XP, to the best of my knowledge, this is the correct behavior of the My Documents and Desktop folders in the All Users folder.

The default location of your My Documents folder is actually, on the C: drive, "Documents and Settings\<username>\My Documents"; that it shows as a system folder on your Desktop is one of the conventions of Windows XP designed to make your computing life easier. (Whether it does or not is a separate issue.) The additional user folder called All Users is the one that all users share in common.

Yeah, I guess I explained that poorly. My problem was that the actual desktop was showing the contents of both folders, rather than just the combined folder.

Anywho, it's fixed now, but thanks for the help.
