CustServ on "What is 'an attack'?"

Why does all of this semantics matter? I still dont really understand the point of this thread. Are you trying to figure it out kust because you want to, or is there an actual in game aplication for whether or not Wall of Fog is an attack?

Well, it says [Class] Attack. It can deal damage. And CSR said it was an attack. It seems pretty straightforward and internally consistent, no? That is, the caster isn't attacking you, but the wall is. That's why it deals damage and doesn't use your ability mods.

In which case, the character with Evasion who is missed by Elemental Maw takes no damage from the Effect.

Wall of Fog isn't an issue. It was an example being used to frame the question - "What is an attack?"

The answer to "What is an attack?" has a lot of in-game application.

Seems right to me. Elemental Maw is an area attack against your reflex and the attack roll missed. Evasion says you don't take the miss damage.

(As an aside, shouldn't that create a zone...? Maybe they only Zone things that you sustanin...)

Evasion says you don't take damage from the attack.

Elemental Maw deals 6d6+Int on a hit, half that on a miss, and creates an area as an Effect, which deals 3d6+Int damage to a creature pulled into it.

Let's say a Wizard casts Elemental Maw, and someone else uses a power that pulls you into the Effect.

If Elemental Maw is an attack, then if it misses you and you have Evasion, you don't take damage from Elemental Maw. No half-damage from the miss, and no 3d6+Int from the Effect.

If Elemental Maw is a power that includes an attack and also an effect, then if it misses you and you have Evasion, you don't take damage from the miss, but you still take 3d6+Int from the Effect... and Wall of Fire is not an attack.

I'd have much preferred you been more up front in your initial question, telling them exactly why you were asking, the examples, the known arguments on both sides, the rules quotes up front, etc..

Instead, it felt like you were suckering them into a particular answer, which is why they asked what you were trying to get it (they sensed the same thing I did form your initial question).

I think it does a disservice to ask open ended questions without giving them all the information you are aware of regarding the issue.
