Hey folks,
In a couple of months I will start with the Gears of Revolution AP for my roleplay group.
So I'm in the middle of preparations and thanks to a lot of people here, I found a huge amount of advice and material to augment the experience of my players.
Thank you all for this awesome content!

On one thing in chapter 12 'The Grinding Gears of Heaven' I didn't find a satisfactory answer on the boards. let me explain....

In Chapter 12 Part 1, the party crash lands on Av and while trying to save some fey, Av breaks apart, consumed by the grinding gears of the Gyre.
In Part 2 there is some reference to Av as being plane 53 on the map which sits all way back, farthest from the destruction of the cogwheels.

How do I have to understand this? Is this a fundamental flaw in the AP? Did I misread this? Or are the remnants of Av thrown across the Gyre and will they be processed again in some distant future?

Thanks for clarification.

Hope to keep you all posted on further developments in short notice.

We decided in mutual agreement the character of Staf had to leave the party. Too many -isms in the character to be able to align it with the current state of the adventure. The player decided to depart with the richest woman in the world and start with another character. So a little bit of an unexpected romance where money is the main driving force. We all know how that will end... :)

Staf escapes the worst of it; he loses a piece of his ear and hears only a loud ringing. Barbara grabs a whistle and plays a tune that frightens Staf. The veteran tries to take cover behind Cassius. Barbara administers her potion of healing to Griento, who begins gasping for breath again. Barbara searches the room; various crates contain luxury goods. She loads 4,000 gp worth of golden tableware into the bag of holding. Staf crushes the skulls of the dead with his maul.

Damata can take the boat to Risur tomorrow in Sid Minos, say Cassius and Barbara. The orc wonders if he might be better off going to Ber, but Cassius thinks it would be wiser for him to start a new life in another country. In Risur he could use his engineering talents for the expansion of the railways. The three RHC members take a short rest.

Nick keeps following Luc and Octavia. They first go to a small market, then have something to eat, and afterward do some shopping. They regularly walk hand in hand. Nick observes that Octavia is indeed deaf. Around ten o’clock they return to the hotel, and Nick heads down to the arena. (and so they miss out on Luc putting runes on their wagon)

The arena is a kind of amphitheater. Staf is allowed into the central, luxurious box, while Barbara and Cassius sit in the one on the left. The box on the right is still empty. In the middle box sit Elanor, Isobel, and three others. On the left, Barbara and Cassius sit alone; the Grientos were also invited but did not come.

The three unknown individuals in the central box are an elf from Risur, a black-clad human, and a human from the clergy of Crisillyir. In the arena, a torero is run down by a bull. The lighting is provided by an ingenious spotlight system. Commentary is also given through a megaphone by a certain Lord Kulp. Meanwhile, Elanor advertises Isobel to the interested buyers. She does not yet reveal what price she expects.

The second fight is between a gigantic bear and six wolves, which are quickly torn apart by the beast.

The elf is a druid from Risur named Jaimy, the man in black is a surly fellow from Nalaam named Nicolaï, and the third person is Father Balthasar. Elanor is clearly a skilled salesperson. The bodyguards consist of two muscular men and two magic users. Barbara doubts whether the elf is truly a druid; Nick even wonders if he might actually be an eladrin.

For the third fight, six chained prisoners are forced into the arena. Suddenly their shackles fall away, and the great bear enters again. From one of the boxes a sword is thrown down. One of the prisoners is Mr. Maple, who tries to climb out of the arena but is pushed back. Another prisoner grabs the sword but is cut down in a single blow from the bear’s claw. Two others quickly follow. Mr. Maple seizes the sword and charges the bear. Time and again he is knocked down, only to stand back up. After a hundred small cuts, the beast finally collapses.

Messengers regularly come to Elanor’s box. After the fight, the light suddenly shines on Elanor’s box, and she speaks with an amplified voice.
“This man here has been following me and my young friend for three days. Before he dies, I want to know his name.”

Andrei replies:
“I know what filth you are planning. I will name you first—you are a witch! I am Andrei of Recklinghausen, and I swear I will free her from you.”

Elanor says she will give one thousand gold to bring the fire cat. The crowd cheers loudly. Andrei has already recovered by now. The gate opens and a gigantic one-eyed cat appears, its fur made of flames. At the same time the bidding begins. Elanor sets the starting price at 300,000 gold pieces. Nick sees Mr. Kulp throw a two-handed axe into the arena. For the first few minutes Andrei manages to survive, dodging the cat, but he does little damage. Eventually he starts taking heavy blows. The cat can cause its flames to flare up, which hinders Andrei’s regeneration. The fight moves beneath the balcony of Cassius and Barbara. The cat drags Andrei down. Barbara fires, and the cat drags Andrei out of the arena.

The bidding gradually rises to 700,000, then passes one million. The three men in the central box take turns bidding. Then Father Balthasar bids one and a half million and wins. The clergy worship several gods, but the foremost among them is Triegenes, a fisherman who became a god. We wonder what the clergy wants with an eladrin. Elanor handles the business side of the transaction. Staf congratulates her and asks for business advice. She will take the train back tomorrow and invites Staf to stay for a month at her estate. He is also welcome to visit her tonight, room 313.

Barbara, Cassius, Nick, and Mel go down to the catacombs to see if Andrei’s body is lying there somewhere. We first check the animal cages. There is no corpse near the fire cat. According to the handler, the gladiator is still alive. Mr. Kulp is taking care of him. We find the arena’s owner; he is standing by Andrei, who lies on a table being treated.

We make some small talk and ask how Andrei is doing. Elanor threw him in here earlier in the day and even paid extra gold to have him fight. He asks whether we will take Andrei with us. Of course. Nick offers the man a cigar from Overflorijn.

Staf spends a wild night with Elanor. He asks what she plans to do with her money, and she once again invites him to visit.

Barbara is cursed by the pistol; she must kill someone every day. Nick will study remove curse tomorrow.

15 Winter 500 AOV

Nick visits Staf in room 313, who tells him he will not be coming with us and is going with Eleanor to her estate.

Nick wants to cast remove curse, but he needs an additional component: a pregnant goat to transfer the curse onto. (I think I might do something here... )

On the train we notice that the compartment next to ours is empty. The Griento family is present, though. Cassius/Felix has written a letter to Stover about Damata, for witness protection, and to have him employed as a train engineer. Andrei decides not to come with us; he wants to search for Isobel. We advise him to travel to Risur if he succeeds in freeing the eladrin. We give him 500 gold.

The train departs with a heavy jolt. There is a new engineer. Nick asks whether the problem with the locomotive has been fixed; Malia says the issue has been reported, but she does not know more.

Tonight we want to kidnap Luc Jierre in Sid Minos. If Kaea contacts us, we must ask where the ship is located and inform her that the Grientos will also be coming along. Around noon Nick receives the message:
“The Impossible will be ready and will then sail to Vendricce, where it will wait for two more days.”

In the afternoon Cassius and Barbara briefly visit Jierre to thank him for the generous dinner. They offer him a drink so they can spend some time in his compartment. He says he is a researcher working on new technologies with military applications. Kane senses that he is only telling half the truth. Barbara asks whether he can use magic, but he denies it, although some tieflings can use magic.

Suddenly Malia arrives to say we are almost there and must return to our compartment. Dusk is falling. The lamps switch on and suddenly glow red, then purple. Symbols begin to light up in our compartment and in the corridor. Felix faints. To him the sun suddenly appears as a tiny point far in the distance. He can no longer see us. Outside it is very dark and the sound is muffled. The light has a purplish hue. A ghost hangs in the corridor.

We sit around the unconscious Felix while Kane studies the energy—clearly planar energy. Ayleen goes to check the next wagon; the orcs have also fainted, except for the woman. Luc and Octavia are nowhere to be found.

Just trying to clarify here, the party as a whole were ok with slave trading? As far as I can see from the latest session report, they did nothing during both arena fights and the bidding.
EDIT: I confess I probably missed something during the previous reports, but wasn't Staf openly hostile to Danorans as a nation? Cause Elanor is definitely Danoran...

They weren’t comfortable with the slave trade, but for them it was more about not blowing their cover and completing the mission. The RHC instructions were very clear about that. I also mentioned several times that slave trading was not uncommon in those countries, unlike in Risur. So in the end they chose not to intervene, which honestly didn’t surprise me given the circumstances.

As for why they helped Damata against the Family but didn’t try to save Isobel—your guess is as good as mine. My impression is that it had something to do with the fact that one could be done discreetly, while the other would have happened in plain sight.

Regarding Staf: I didn’t explicitly portray Elanor as Danoran, and it felt like a very “Stafian” way for the character to exit the story, so I simply allowed it.

These choices might seem strange from the outside, but a lot depends on small details that were mentioned (or forgotten) and on how the players interpret the situation.
No 2 stories evolve the same way I guess ...

Enter Gianni, undercover agent from the RHC in Crissillyir
Felix ends up in another dimension. The sound is muffled. Felix casts Mage Armor. The other unconscious orcs—a father, son, and daughter—are also in the train. Black spirits seep through the walls of the train. Initiative!

Felix casts Mirror Image. The spirits appear to be immune to necrotic damage. One spirit swings its sickle and hits… a Mirror Image.

A second spirit tries to approach Felix and touch him but fails. The orcs also become involved in the fight. The children deal more damage than Felix. Orc children vs. halflings, apparently.

Felix attacks again. Beams of light shoot toward a spirit, which immediately collapses. The next spirit, surprisingly, also goes down from another beam of light. Radiant beams prove effective: the third and final spirit disappears.

The feeling of victory is short-lived. Four new spirits appear. It turns out the orc children can attack with the artifacts, but they miss. In a subsequent attack from a spirit, the girl is knocked unconscious, which sends the father into a rage.

Felix tries his luck again by firing beams of light at them. One spirit manages to dodge, but the second and third spirits vanish again. As Felix fires the beams, his hands burst into flames.

A spirit attacks Felix but strikes a Mirror Image. Two versions of Felix remain in the train—but which one is real? Only the halfling knows. Felix and the orc manage to banish the remaining spirits again. A brief moment of rest. The orc father checks on his daughter. Felix revives her with a Potion of Healing.

The light appears to come from outside, further toward the locomotive. They prepare to investigate the source.

In the other dimension (the real reality), we make our way toward the dining car. Kane sees a monstrosity in the center, black and hanging from the ceiling. Saria reacts to the screams of the orc mother and begins healing the daughter, who is bleeding heavily.

Ayleen climbs out the window and reaches the roof of the train. Her well-aimed shot strikes the lantern, while in the background the next city and its station come into view. The lantern explodes and the purple light disappears. Felix’s journey to the other dimension ends abruptly.

The monster remains in the train and attacks. Kane fires beams of light and withdraws, but the monster follows them and deals the first damage. Saria steps out of the compartment and summons a Moonbeam. The magical moonlight seems to strike the monster severely.

Despite the slowing train, Ayleen manages to climb back down and begins shooting at the monster again from the other side of the carriage. The radiant shots have a tremendous impact on the dark spirit. In a final action, it is up to Kane to send the creature back into the darkness from which it came.

Kane and Felix enter Luc Jierre’s compartment and begin investigating. Ayleen exits the train and, in the distance, sees the group of four leaving the train near the cargo wagon.

Saria transforms into a cat and gives chase. Together with Ayleen, she begins a race to catch up. Luc and Octavia climb into a carriage decorated with purple pennants and ride off. Ayleen and Saria hesitate no longer and follow.

The streets are crowded, but the carriage moves quickly toward the harbor. Pipistrella also helps keep track of the carriage.

Meanwhile, Kane and Felix examine Luc Jierre’s belongings. Everything is moved to our own compartment.

The carriage stops at the quay. Octavia steps out of the carriage and boards a rowboat. Saria (still in cat form) follows her into the water, transforms into an octopus, and attaches herself to the boat. There is an island nearby, and a second rowboat approaches that is clearly sinking. Octavia disappears onto the island.

Saria makes contact with the drowning person. While discussing their next steps, both of them hear a voice in their minds:

“Quick! The priestess is nearly finished with her ritual. Undead will soon flood this place. Get into the water quickly, or come down to me.”

Saria and the stranger swim away from the island. The undead begin emerging from the water and moving onto the island.

Ayleen follows the carriage back to the station, but the carriage turns out to be empty. The driver has a letter from Octavia, but the information goes beyond the purpose of the taxi ride. Octavia has left for Odiem Island, but why share that information with the driver? There is no trace of the other three.

Kane vents his frustration about the failed mission

Saria brings the drowning person back to the quay. Along the way they get acquainted, and it turns out they are both waiting for a ship to sail back to Risur. The stranger’s ship is waiting outside the harbor. Impossible! What a coincidence. Saria keeps up her cover, although she suspects the stranger is also an RHC agent. The stranger goes looking for a book.

Felix and Kane search the hotel for Griento and Luc Jierre. Luc Jierre and his cohort are not known at the hotel. Saria returns.

Kane advises Ayleen to find a solution to her problem: locating a pregnant goat.
RHC Leadership Handbook, Chapter 1 — don’t bring problems, bring solutions.

An employee is sent out to find a pregnant goat.

The pregnant goat arrives at the hotel half an hour before midnight. A ritual begins in the hotel room. Kane attempts to transfer the curse from the pistol onto the pregnant goat.

Meeeh! The goat begins to bleat.

What will its future be? Poster girl for a heavy metal band?

It is decided to stop pursuing Luc Jierre and instead try to reach the Impossible. The goat is no longer our problem. We take the Griento orc family with us and leave the hotel through a back door.

We arrive at the harbor and see the drowning person, who turns out to be Gianni, a colleague from the RHC. Gianni has arranged a boat. Favors are exchanged.

The boat is just large enough to carry nine people. To be safe, Saria takes the form of an octopus and swims part of the way. Meanwhile, Gianni is updated on the latest RHC gossip. Gianni has been undercover in Crisillyir for three years. His results concern La Familia.

We approach the Impossible and board the ship. Captain Rutger Smith welcomes us. The plan to sail to Vendricce is agreed upon. We rest that night. Before turning in, Kane casts Aid.

15 Winter 500 AOV

We wake up, and Ayleen summons Pipistrella. Her observations: twenty soldiers searched the train. Afterward, Luc Jierre and his two bodyguards boarded the train and departed.

Around noon we arrive at the harbor. We prepare to observe Luc Jierre during his meeting. Kane lightly disguises himself, Ayleen relies on her stealth skills, and Saria on her shapeshifting.

Luc Jierre’s train is expected around 17:30, and the Obscurati meeting is scheduled for 20:00. The plan is to observe.

Pipistrella watches the train’s arrival. Gianni stands at the entrance of the enclave. Saria, disguised as a cat, waits in the station.

The train arrives. No one exits the first-class carriage. Luc Jierre is nowhere to be seen. Kane uses Locate Object to ping the dwarf’s dice. A signal comes from the first-class wagon.

The train is split up and each class is taken away by a small locomotive. The first-class carriage remains behind.

Pipistrella flies past the windows of the train. There is still movement inside.

The final train section is towed into a hangar.

Saria, still disguised as a cat, jumps onto the train.
