D&D 2 Movie Preview at Gen Con!

Hey Felon! :)

I wouldn't say the tone needs to be extremely "serious" so much as "commited" and a tad "subdued".

I remember someone succinctly explaining why the television show Xena worked far better than Hercules was that the actors were playing it seriously.

An overdose of seriousness leads to melodrama, which can be as self-effacing as winking at the camera (the short-lived 1990's Vampire the Masquerade springs to mind immediately as a show that took itself too seriously all the time).

Too much of anything is obviously going to be a bad thing.

IMO Sin City provides a good example of actors commited to larger-than-life characters that spout over-the-top dialogue.

That was simply a tribute to the film noir origins to which genre Sin City definately belongs. Check out movies like The Big Sleep or Farewell My Lovely for some of the greatest examples of the genre.

I thought Sin City was fantastic, certainly the best film of the year in my eyes.

Well I was hoping I wasn't going to hear about this, but a friend of mine found the D&D2 movie on the internet and downloaded it.

:\ His review on it was that it made the first movie look good....that can't be good. I'll probably still watch it though to see if it is as craptacular as it is suggested.
It amazes me (but then again, I have no idea how the hollywood machine works) that a movie due out in november has already been pirated.

We don't know what editing, special effects, or scenes may be left out of that cut, it was clearly never meant to be viewed in that state. Also, just a one-sentence statement like that doesn't exactly say what is wrong with the movie. The first movie had some serious problems with being a movie about D&D that we know are fixed in the second one. While most gamers generally agree that the first D&D movie was a stinker, some movies that are widely hated by many are loved by others (look at the Star Wars prequels, loved by some, utterly hated by others).

This leaked version is almost certainly unfinished, and rough cuts don't look good or sound good, they aren't complete for a reason, if you saw an unfinished cut of even a "good" movie you may well think it's terrible without proper editing, sound effects, visual effects, and other postproduction. At Gen Con last week they said the movie was still in postproduction, and they could only estimate the length of the movie, so doubtless there are other things that are incomplete.

So, I'm not passing judgement based on any almost certainly incomplete leaked version floating around on the internet, I'll wait until the premier on Sci-Fi Channel on October 8th. If it's a stinker or a hit, we'll be talking about it here one way or the other.

Two and one half months before the release!? I'm somewhat skeptical to say the least, they don't even have a proper trailer for it online yet!

Well how about a spoiler free review from him then?

Wait a minute. Whats this about the Sci-fi channel now? I thought it was going to be a dvd release on November 8th? Is this some new development?

Edit: Okay I just went to sci-fi.com, they are indeed showing it on October 8th!

I sure hope we see WotC putting more Ismer material up online, like they did for the last movie.

What? The Web content was pretty good, despite the awfulness of the movie. Somewhere, they've got at least two movie tie-in supplements that were never published, just waiting to be raided for more Web content.

As I recall, the website content was pretty bad, and didn't jive very well with the much better material in Dragon #280.

I agree with you there, unfortunately I wasn't able to dig on details since I was coming on shift and he was leaving. As far as the editing process goes and actual smoothing of the CG, I also don't believe that it is fully completed either, but that's why I said I plan on seeing it anyways. I'm sure crappy or not, the kids would like it.
