Hey Felon! 
I remember someone succinctly explaining why the television show Xena worked far better than Hercules was that the actors were playing it seriously.
Too much of anything is obviously going to be a bad thing.
That was simply a tribute to the film noir origins to which genre Sin City definately belongs. Check out movies like The Big Sleep or Farewell My Lovely for some of the greatest examples of the genre.
I thought Sin City was fantastic, certainly the best film of the year in my eyes.

Felon said:An overdose of seriousness leads to melodrama, which can be as self-effacing as winking at the camera (the short-lived 1990's Vampire the Masquerade springs to mind immediately as a show that took itself too seriously all the time).
