D&D 5E (2024) D&D 2024 Rules Oddities (Kibbles’ Collected Complaints)

One handed two-weapon fighting doesn't work. Two-weapon fighting states "When you make an extra attack as a result of using a weapon that has the Light property", The light property states "That extra attack must be made with a different Light weapon". Dual wielder plainly states. "you can make one extra attack as a Bonus Action later on the same turn with a different weapon"
What you’re missing with this exploit is that you can make an attack, drop the weapon, then draw a different Light weapon as part of your second attack. That’s how one-handed dual wielding works.

It says it must be made with a different light weapon, not with a light weapon in the other hand and not with one that is being held at the same time.

If you are holding a Shield for example in one hand and a short sword in the other, you attack with the short sword and then sheath it, then you draw and attack with a Scimitar using the nick property.

I'm not sure I'd be able to stop slapping a player who tried that in front of me...

I think that’s how most of these rules exploits worth. Technically possible but would require some brass balls to square up to explain you are doing them. Even then probably overruled by social contract or rule zero.

So, if at 17th level I am ripping my bodice and wailing at the uncaring sky that Vex is now utterly useless to me... then I can just take Slow on the Longbow for those times that I wasn't able to get into melee range.

Because you only get 2 attacks a round with a Longbow, vs 3-4 with hand crossbows and daggers and a feat.

The so called "good" but really mediocre damage numbers that get thrown around for Hunter's Mark do not work with a Longbow. They are mediocre with light weapons nick and a feat to drive the number of attacks up.

At level 17, when you are getting advantage without Vex; If you are using a Longbow and Hex it is downright poor damage. It is comparable to what a caster is doing with Cantrips without needing Hunters Mark and without using a bonus action or any short rest/long rest resources.

Okay.... what if your beast isn't in range to attack anyone? What if there is nowhere you particularly want to teleport to? Also, Hex? Soo.... exactly the same as casting Hunter's Mark?

Like I said it works at times. If your beast isn't in position to attack, or you don't need to teleport or you don't want to turn invisible then sure you cast it and then the next round if you hold on to concentration and the guy you marked is still alive and the situation is such that you want to attack him, then sure it works but this is not "most of the time"

Sure, if you assume that you are playing a specific ranger, with specific abilities, in a specific situation where a specific ability is better than Hunter's Mark... then Hunter's Mark won't be a good choice.

Nature's Veil is quite a bit better than Hunter's Mark in most situations and all Rangers get it.

To turn this around if you assume you are playing a Ranger that does not have a better situational bonus action option through class, subclass, race or feat and you assume you are not going to concentrate on a better spell and you assume you can hang on to concentration for a round and you assume the enemy will still be alive and in an area where it is a good idea to attack him next round ..... yes if you assume all those things it is a good choice.

But that doesn't mean it will NEVER be the right choice.

I did not say it would "never" be the right choice, just that it wouldn't be a good choice most of the time at level.

Maybe Chromescale already used their 1 free Misty step and can't use it again today. Maybe there is no where to teleport to and they want to save that teleportation for a more impactful moment. These things DO happen.

And enemies DO run away taking your Hunter's Mark with them, enemies DO die before you get to attack them next round, players DO lose concentration and situations dictate not attacking the enemy you marked the previous round. These things too DO happen.

No, you don't. Because Short Sword and Hand Crossbow doesn't have the Short Sword using the text of Crossbow Expert.

Here is the relevant text of the Crossbow Expert feat:

Dual Wielding. When you make the extra attack of the Light property, you can add your ability modifier to the damage of the extra attack if that attack is with a crossbow that has the Light property and you aren’t already adding that modifier to the damage.

Shortsword has the Light property. Short Sword and Hand Crossbow work fine.

In the 15 months since I last posted on here I played three 2024 Rangers, two of them level 1-20 and one that is currently level 2 and the results are pretty consistent. Hunter's Mark is not a very effective spell at high level.
