D&D 4th Edition, H Series, Online Game

you are right and wrong...with my build I have a straight die roll vs AC which will not increase because to increase any other effective powers, I cannot place attribute increases into strength. this means that as enemy levels and AC increases, my ability to hit them ata ll with a melee attack are decreasing. AS to ranged attacks, you are correct. They do go against will which is usually a winning combo CLeric vs warriors, but a loser against other spellcasters and incresingly inneffective as the level and magic using ability of enemies increases. The main purpose of a leader is to provide support for the front liners and somewhat affect the field of battle thru buffs, debuffs, and limited AoE powers. Unfortunately the most powerful or effective of these powers are MELEE based not ranged and so I will never be able to pull them off consistently.

I see what your concern might be. If you are looking at higher level encounter and daily powers that you want to use, and notice that they are melee based powers keyed off of Strength, then yes. You absolutely have a problem. However, not all melee powers are Strength vs Whatever. I am not that familiar with the Cleric's class abilities, but as long as you stick to combat powers keyed off Wisdom, your character will continue to be effective in combat. If you are realizing that the mechanical build choices you made are not suitable to the type of character you want to play, then you should modify the character.

But I think that there are some false assumptions here about monsters in 4th Edition. With few exceptions, the Reflex, Will and Fort defense scores are always going to be lower then AC. There may be a few Controllers, Artillery and Lurker type monsters that have lower AC then Will / Ref / Fort. A (admittedly very brief) search of MM1 seems to show Reflex being the same as AC for certain Lurkers, but usually at least 2 points lower. Monsters are not defined so much by what they use to attack with (claws vs spells) as much as how their assigned role defines them. A Hobgoblin Archer and a Magma Hurler (type of Magma Beast in MM1 on page 182) are both Artillery types. The Hobgoblin is a level 3 monster, and the Hurler a level 4. The def stats are as follows:

Hobgoblin Archer: AC 17; Fortitude 13, Reflex 15, Will 13
Magma Hurler AC 18; Fortitude 15, Reflex 17, Will 13

If you adjust for level and designer fiat, both these Artillery monsters have a Reflex score lower than AC by 1 or 2 points, and generally have all defense scores lower than AC. One is clearly a magical type of monster. The other is just some Humanoid with a bow. If you compare any two monsters of the same role and level (and make sure you do not compare a Elite, Solo, Minion or Leader type to one that is not the same subtype), the pattern should mostly hold. All defenses will be very close to one another.

The point I am trying to get at is that as long as you remember that the designers expect the PC's to acquire a certain amount of magical gear, there is not much reason for your characters ability to be useful against a given type of monster to dramatically change much. Attack bonus and Def scores scale at roughly the same rate as you level up (by a half point per level, plus the occasional bump from a stat increase, feat, or magic item).

As far as scaling goes, yes, magic items can help me scale up a bit, but so will enemies. That's my point. if I can only rely on items to increase my characters ability to be effective, then why level up at all? Why not just make money and adorn myself with magic items that duplicate powers and increase damage?

I know this is meant as a rhetorical question, but I will answer it anyway. First, magic items cannot in any way replace the core At Will / Encounter / Daily powers. They add a bit, but they do not have nearly the same impact. You advance in levels for more HP, more feats, and more powers, and so that your overall attack bonus will be able to hit the higher level monsters. At level 1, your not going to hit a level 5 monster very often, but at level 5, you will hit more.

Getting back to more mundane matters, do you only have access to the PHB, or do you also have access to the Divine Power book? You might be able to find powers more suitable for your character in Divine Power.

I have access to all the core books now. Reading them is what has really turned the light on. I have set out for Eryiedes the changes I want to make and sent him a revised character sheet. Per my earlier post, I am going to change a feat, a daily, and fix my stats (including the screwed up point thing). Nothing else changes. ANd I don't acquire any new abilities per se, just the ability to have a basic melee attack, and a better WIS score.

I realized htat making a character in 4e is a lot like deck building so I realized I needed to revisein order to do what I imagined from the start of this campaign. I knew I would NEVER be a combat monster, but I did want ot have a buff/debuff effect on the fights and to be able to stand next to an enemy without praying for survival (pun intended).

So...if your ok withthis, then ill wait for FC and the new guy to chime in..

Turns out my machine will be down all weekend so friday is cancelled.....thought I might be up on sat the latest but my machine won't be back online till about monday.
Sorry guys.....guess we resume on the 9th and not the 2nd.

WotC says no more books?
Well, some of us in the community could see this coming for a while now but "NO MORE GAME BOOKS".....they have finally gone TOO far.
My support for the rpg community has been active for 27 plus years has now officially come to a screeching halt.
Take away my books?
I am taking away my money to another company that will not punish me for being able to actually read.
I will never buy another D&D product EVER again!
Gygax is turning in his grave and with good reason!
So it is with humble heart that I offically declare myself a GURPS player and finger my nose at "Wannabes of the Crust".
KISS MY PUCKER MOTHERFU-
They are no longer deserving of anything but my scorn....and if they are expecting something else....(like buyer gratitude)....all they will get is a kick in the balls from me.
Perhaps its an april fool's joke.....but I don't think so.

Peace & Light

On an unrealated note.....Zam, we still have no character submission by you yet.
