I love the vagueness of the rumor. This has all the basics of an urban legend.
Unconfirmed "reliable" source.
No real evidence
Assurance that it is not a prank or joke.

Let the weekly 4th edition troll begin.

I swear my cat just told me that 4th edition came out last week. The Emperor already has his copy.

I hope that you are not referring to me as a troll, I hate them too. And let the record show, I said references to it, not a reliable source per se. *jump the shark here, oops, Sorry about that :o *

Well, I saw no one went for looking for this, or post it. But here is some references to the suppose 4th Edition, dealing with Greyhawk.

*walks away, and looks back at the small embers that may or may not...explode*
That's nothing that hasn't been predicted/hoped for here and other boards since it became obvious WotC was going to do jack with GH.

I heard a rumor at Gencon from a fairly big industry type that did not come across at all like a joke or jest; and that was a planned release of a 4th edition in late 2006 (or early 2007 at latest). Has anyone anywhere heard from any other seemingly legit sources about such a monster?

Just VERY VERY curious.
And for the record...not next year either. :)

It was from one person, who is NOT with WOTC, but has done a good bit with them and others, I simply didn't want to provide his name because if it was wrong (as it does appear to be) I didn't want to sully the fellow or create undo stress or harassment in his direction. It was a simple curiousity. And yes, I agree with someone else, if another edition comes out within the next 8 years me and my cash will run as far away as I can from WOTC and their printing minions.

I guess you cannot tell me your cat's name, so better preserve his respectability if things turned wrong? Anyway, I very much like Larry Elmore's pic of a nude succubus in neo-punk bikini on page 38 of the 4e PHB.

Crybabies.

I used to pay hundreds of dollars a year for my gaming addiction: Magic. I didn't complain if a new edition came out every year. I was happy when the new editions came out, because it meant new cool toys to play with.

Seriously, is a hundred bucks of books such a hard thing to pay once every three years for a game you love? Such wankers. The whole "OH NOZE! It was less than ten years. ME AM PISSED!" posse is annoying me.

Look, WotC's not going to put out 4th edition until 2010. They probably should put out a new edition in '08, but they're afraid of folks complaining and whining and not buying their books. I mean, dang, if they did put out a new edition, why would you be angry? It's not like you have to buy new books.

If you don't want the new car, don't complain that the car company is trying to give customers the best, most up-to-date car they can make. Keep your old jalopy of a roleplaying system and stop acting like it's a personal insult for WotC to release a new edition. I'll take my brand new Porsche, thank you very much.

Uh, no. That's an Easley. But don't feel bad, lots of people get them confused. Now that I think about it, it might be Parkinson...... Oh well....
