as an introduction to the 'new and improved' 3e, WotC ran D&D Adventure games on the OSU campus (and others, i'm sure). this was before the release of the 3e PH, to get people interested...

In my opinion, D&D Lite already exists in the form of the D&D Adventure Boxed Set they released at or around the same time as the 3e rules.

You're probably right, although I haven't seen this sold anywhere that someone was likely to buy it. I suspect it may not be selling well, or may not be reprinted. Anyone know for sure?

And (I don't own it, but flipped through it once), wasn't it a bit too dumbed down, lacked level progression, etc? I envision D&D Lite as something that COULD stand alone, if needed.

Or maybe diaglo & I just need to take out the old red book and run a few adventures ...:D

I think the D&D Adventure Game set is fantastic, but it is a lead-in product. After three levels you have to buy the PHB to keep on progressing.

Ahh... thinking about the Adventure Game fills me with bubbly gooey joy. I'd love to give this to an eight year old and see what happens.

That's how I feel about my original pink box ... that I got at about that age, right after reading LOTR.

With HP2 and The Two Towers both coming out around Christmas, the time is right for a little D&D expansion action.

One wonders how many completely NEW players that tour generated, vs. the number it converted from other editions, or brought back into the fold (all good, but you need fresh blood for the D&D vampire to grow ...)

I got the black box, with the big red dragon on the front, for Christmas one year. I remember seeing that box under the tree and ripping away a tiny bit of wrapping paper on the front to see the dragon scales - and then I made sure that was the first present I opened :)

Good times.

The thing that got me into AD&D back in the early 80's was an in-store display in a neighborhood drugstore (believe it or not!).

It was an end-cap display with the product and a free, folded, two-sheet pamphlet with an transcript of an AD&D game. If I remember correctly, it had a small party encounter a pit, swing over it on a rope, and then get ambused by an owlbear--really simple stuff but absolutely mindboggling to a 10-year old who had never heard of role playing before.

Those were long weeks saving allowance before I could buy the basic set at Target.

It was actually pretty cool, they had actors there in character-type costumes, armor and swords and stuff, and had a big tent set up on the lawn with demo games running inside and the adventure boxed set intro thing for sale. It was rather nifty. I remember them saying they were on a big campus tour, 20 or 30 campuses maybe.
