Doesn't really make a difference to me because I no longer play D&D. Why? Because of things like this, seems they can't be bothered to create anything new and original anymore. They just keep pulling from the same well that IMO has long since gone dry.
In a lot of ways, that sums up generally any media IP though doesn't it? Marvel going back to decades old storylines for the MCU or shows, Star Wars always needing to have Jedi and Skywalkers in everything, Star Trek always seeming to need to find a way to work Kirk and/or Pike back into things?

You've given around a dozen reasons why you don't play D&D anymore and they're all different than this reason.

This particular well isn't dry - it hasn't been revisited in 40 years and there was growing interest in this IP on the net for several years before this. It's not for you, but that's different than the well being dry. Regardless, of all years, the 50th anniversary was more likely than any other year to address fan nostalgia.

So you think inventing a completely new and original evil bald wizard would add significantly?

D&D is built out of archetypes, tropes and clichés. It's not about wildly original and different storytelling.

If my memory doesn't fail I read in TV Tropes Hasbro wasn't the owner of the characters from the cartoon but I guess they talked with Disney and they payed to "recovered" them.

Even when they are from a forgotten IP they have got more "brand power" than starting from zero.

Could Hasbro to pay for the "soundtrack" of the Spanish intro?

Legend
Go on an adventure featuring beloved characters from the classic Dungeons & Dragons cartoon series while using the 2024 Player's Handbook rules! Level 4 characters are provided along with rules references for the 2024 core ruleset.
So will the DDB release include official 5e revised stats for the 80s cartoon cast? If so, going to be interesting to see what subclasses they choose.
