D&D Basic Set info

The trick is making char gen simpler so that it's truely enjoyable for newbies and not a two-hour math seminar

No trick. Moldvay did just fine. :D

It will be difficult though w/ a D20 rules-set. It should have a very minimal skill set (about 8-10 skills) and about 20 feats max with suggestions on what each class should take.

I'm looking forward to this product. If nothing else to just feel like a kid again :D

HERO system player: "Hey what's wrong with a two-hour maths seminar?"

LOL :D Even HERO has gone the basic set route, SideKick is due in stores in the next few days. 128 pgs, 10 bucks. Perfect size and price, AFAIC. I'll be picking up a copy after buying FRED and being totally overwhelmed by how complicated HERO has become in the last 20 years.

I agree. If it is an introductory game, it should be simplified otherwise the entry barrier to enjoying the game may be too steep ;) And also, if presented as "introductory", it should leave quite a lot for later discovery.

At least, showing only what is available at low levels makes it a lot simpler. If they choose to allow levels 1-5, then only part of the feats and spells must be known for example.

But it's good to still have the chance to customize your PC (at least partly) since the start, since developing your character is always a central part of playing the game, and having only pre-generated characters would have been a mistake IMHO.

Wow. They must about a bazillion set of those dice, they are the same ones in the 3E intro set.

Anyone know what the other game on the gallery page is? The one with the hex tiles?

Yea, that'd be smart, let's put a red dragon mini in the basic boxed set. :)

Newbie DM: "I don't know why my players keep dying!"

To be nostalgic, they really need a rust monster mini in there, though.

Is the rust monster based on a real dinosaur?

I only ask because I recently saw a set of plastic dinosaurs that had a rust monster in it! Admittedly it was in a discount store so perhaps it was discounted when someone pointed out that wasn't a real dinosaur and actually copyrighted by WotC.

I had that set when I was a kid. That doesn't mean the rust monster is based on a real dinosaur. There are a number of anatomical irregularities that make it impossible that anything resembling the rust monster could possibly be a dinosaur, or any type of earth-based lifeform, for that matter.

Perhaps it's something like the starting package characters listed for each class in the PHB.

That thing sure LOOKS nice. And 16 minis is always good...wonder what the distribution of commons/uncommons/rares is...and what set(s) they draw from.

If the marketing guys are smart, the'll be at least a few brand-spanking-new minis in the set.

Get the minis people in a uproar.
