The young people I know use AI for transitory stuff that they don't care about. "Real" stuff they want human-made and are enthusiastic about stuff like actual physical books and such.

I think they are going to beat their elders to the punch in seeing that something human-made is of more value.
Anything is possible, but I have my doubts that anyone would notice the difference between a 300 page novel meant to be read in an afternoon whether it was written by a person or AI. The medium in that case is not intended to be savored or deeply appreciated. it is mental potato chips to begin with.

Hilariously (sadly?) I just saw this headline.

"Gen Z is the first generation less cognitively capable than their parents."

"For this invention will produce forgetfulness in the minds of those who learn to use it, because they will not practice their memory. Their trust in writing, produced by external characters which are no part of themselves, will discourage the use of their own memory within them. You have invented an elixir not of memory, but of reminding; and you offer your pupils the appearance of wisdom, not true wisdom, for they will read many things without instruction and will therefore seem to know many things, when they are for the most part ignorant and hard to get along with, since they are not wise, but only appear wise." -- Socrates

People have been saying that the kids aren't all right and the newest technology will make us dumber than a box of rocks as long as there have been boxes to put rocks in. And probably the invention of the box got the same kind of bad rap.

"And these children that you spit on as they try to change their worlds
Are immune to your consultations
They're quite aware of what they're going through". - David Bowie.

And boy do we older folk have a lot to answer for when they question the mess we left them.....

I know man, but just as with everything else somewhat related to this (cough cough screens, phones, AI, cough cough) there is a difference in terms of scale, and effort, and pervasiveness.

You know this.

Its going to simply derail the thread, so we can ignore it, but there are reasons they are trying to get phones out of schools.

When you dont really need to think, and you dont really need to understand any of the actual workings or logic, and the AI will spit out an answer (right or wrong!) this isnt going to improve cognitive ( relating to the process of acquiring knowledge and understanding through thought, experience, and the senses) ability.

But again, I think highly enough of you, that I believe you know this.

That Socrates quote sure seems relevant though when applied to a smart phone and a chat bot!

We have multiple, consistent studies that show that AI assistance increases capability at the time but causes a loss of capability when AI is taken away. Not just students, but actual doctors. This isn't telling at clouds about those lazy kids. It is a very serious problem.

When I was a kid, we memorized multiplication tables and had to learn math without calculators (they existed, I'm not that old, we weren't allowed to use them).

Today, my students cannot do math WITHOUT a calculator.

Progress?

That said, there are some fields or tasks where AI does not increase productivity or effectiveness, but actively harms it. Mostly due to crappy, not-ready-for-prime-time AI tools pushed by Big Tech. That will pass as tools improve.
