D&D comic: Hand of Vecna

bolen

First Post
I was just cleaning up a book self and ran into a D&D comic called the Hand of Vecna. As I recall the story was OK but the art is great. Any one know if there are more like this. I tried to google the name but did not find anything else.

I remember that one. I talked to those guys briefly about the same time we were publishing our second or third D&D comic series.

Not sure what happened to them, but unless they did something else (which I doubt, based on what little insider info I have), that was the only one.

Vecna: Hand of the Reveanant?

Hi all-
A comic of Vecna? The only one I know of is VecnaL Hand of the Reveanant that is like a graphic novel. Some "sweddish" sounding name (Thorson) I believe wrote it.
It revolved around Vecna taking over the Flananesss and a Pholtan city holding out until the last minute.
Is this the comic you are discussing? If not, I'd like to know the name and publisher of the one you are, so as to order it.

Issak's recollection is correct---the author was Modi Thorrson, and he (and the artist IIRC) is Icelandic. I was able to complete part of an interview with Modi for the Oerth Journal before he disappeared for awhile; we're still in very sporadic communication, but I haven't heard from him in a year or so :/

He had outlined several parts in emails to me as part of the interview, but they never materialized. I'll dig up the interview and see if we can get it into OJ17, which should be available soon after OJ16 (see www.canonfire.com if you're interested in more discussion about the OJ production schedule).

Yeah, Moði. I knew him. I haven't seen him for years, though, I don't know what
happened to him. Was in a gaming group with my friend's older brother. IIRC, he
was half american or had an american stepfather/mother or something like that.

"Vecna: Hand of the Revenant" is by Iron Hammer Graphics, with the art being done by Kevin McCann and the story being written by Moddi Thorsson. The official website for the graphic novel was at www.cultofvecna.net but it seems that it's gone now...not that it was anything except a single graphic with an "under construction" banner before.

I had the luck of purchasing this during its debut at GenCon 2002, when the artist and writer were there selling copies. It tells the story of young Vecna growing up (mostly his childhood with his evil, but loving, mother, her death, and his coming back to the city of his youth, Fleeth, to destroy it).

While visually spectacular, and an excellent read, the graphic novel is definately non-canon. It says that Acererak was a disciple of Vecna (something Moddi, IIRC, said was inspired by a pic in the original Tomb of Horrors seeming to be of Vecna's hand-and-eye symbol). It also has Vecna losing his hand and eye, not at the hands of Kas, but instead due to an attack of holy energy from the clergy of Fleeth. Also, it has Vecna meeting The Serpent for the first time as a young boy, which is questionable.

During my meeting with Kevin and Moddi (at which I was smart enough to have them autograph my copy), they said this was actually meant to be the first of six such graphic novels about Vecna (hence the cliffhanger at the end of this one), but it seems the deal has long since fallen through, since you can barely find mention of this trade paperback unless you are deliberately looking for it.
