D&D Comic hits stores today!

I just picked this up today, had my choice of cover "A" or cover "B", went with "A". Really wanted cover "RI" . . . where do you get that? Rhode Island?

Artwork was fantastic, and better yet, each story has a completely different style. I'm not a huge comics guy, but the Dark Sun story art reminded me of Mike Mignola's work (Hellboy). Both stories were well written and fun, with the Nentir Vale story being very high adventure with lots of verbal quips, and the Dark Sun story being darker (and much briefer). The issue has news, interviews, and the stat block for the Black Dragon that appears in this Nentir Vale story. It appears to be an updated version of the Young Black Dragon (Level 4 Solo Lurker) from MM1.

Oh, and NEWS!!!!!

The news section in the back CONFIRMS that the classic DC run of comics will be reprinted in omnibus format starting February 2011! And the Devil's Due novel adaptations will be reprinted in omnibus as well, although it doesn't say when.

I ask this because
that black dragon went down amazingly quickly.
Still I think it'll be enjoyable. Certainly the price is right. I'm not all that big in to collecting comics aside from Astro City, but I can see making a point of getting this. Hopefully the writing is good. We'll see soon enough.

I think . . .

[sblock]. . . the dragon encounter was told quite well. All the heroes were freaked and assumed that Adric was a goner, including Adric (making his decision to take on the dragon so that the others could escape very heroic). It was only the comic blunder of the thief that saved the day, and I found it pretty entertaining! I wouldn't run an rpg encounter this way, but this isn't a D&D game, it's an adaptation of D&D into a different medium, and I could see this happening in a novel or movie. It was also unexpected, which made it a great story bit for me.[/sblock]

Nothing like starting with the best to screw up your standards. If you want some good further reading, check out V for Vendetta (better than the movie, and that's saying something), Transmetropolotan (A personal favorite), Y The Last Man, and of course Sandman.

For the super-hero bent, I'd recommend Kingdom Come. The artwork is worth it, even if you hate the story. I love the story, but that's beside the point, I'm biased. Planet Hulk was also surprisingly good.

You should also check out Grant Morrison's Batman R.I.P and Batman and Robin run. Also Heinsberg's Young Avengers, Joss Whedon's Runaways and the Scott Pilgrim series.

Oooo. What's Joss Whedon's Runaways? I read his Astonishing X-Men and enjoyed that as a nice stand alone comic.

Back to the DND comics. I did try and collect them, both back in the 80s/90s and the ones from about a decade ago. Most of the time I try and get the trades, so I at least have a full story all contained but for DND I will usually get the monthlies. I am excited about the Dark Sun comic more because, for me, Dark Sun is so visual and I would love to have pictures to show the players.

Thanks for the update! Also, interesting that the old comics will be republished. I still have mine but it's tempting . . .

I believe so; they mentioned Gen Con in the book, at least.

evildmguy, Runaways was an excellent comic originally written by Brian K. Vaughan; Joss Whedon was a fan, and had a run on the book, too. It was pretty Whedon-esque all along, really. Excellent, fun comic, IMHO.

It means "Retailer Incentive," It's a rare, variant cover that comes on in every ten, 25, 50, 100 or however many comics the store orders. It's a gimmick that comic book publishers use to sell more units.

Looks like I need to spread some XP around before gifting you again, but thanks! And here I thought the Rhode Island comic lobby was strangely and disproportionately powerful . . .

You're talking about The Runaways as if it was over. They haven't finished.

It's about a group of kids who learn by accident that their parents are supervillains and decide to do something about it. They run away. ;)

It's awesome.
