Well not necessarily helpful but I sure wanted to use it for the one group I was in that thought 2nd edition was easy to learn...

The same way that the Brits resisted switching to decimal currency because it was difficult? :p

The Auld Grump

Grump,

You could say that. They like THACO (yes one guy said that), they like the "minimium scores" and a lot of the other mechanics. One guy said "I couldn't figure out how to hit some or cast a spell!" This was a gnome sorcerer mind you. All in all, I need to get out of Morgantown. :p

I bought it for my wife and it's quite a well designed book for beginners. She also learned about mechanics playing Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights on the computer, but the book really helped for game night.

I just purchased this last weekend for my fiancee. Of course I needed to read through it first ;). It's very well written, and has a lot of great pointers on "how to play" not so much the rules, although that is covered well enough to get a new player going.

There are sections on topics such as table rules/etiquette, being effective in combat, and a character's typical role in an adventuring party. My fiancee found the section on choosing your character's class usefull.

There is also a section for DMs and it is full of usefull info for beginning and experienced alike.

I have yet to finish reading, and we have not played the obligatory sample adventure, but so far this looks pretty cool.

For a new player, I'd go with the boxed set, the dummies book, and the Player's Handbook two for it's discussion on various role playing aspects. Another one might be the old Hero Builder's Handbook. Good for newbies, useless for anything else.
