D&D Geeks Unite: Expand the Wikipedia

Simplicity

Let's see what the combined knowledge of EN World can do... Admit it. We know *way* too much about the history of the D&D worlds. What if we took that info and wrote it down?

Let's see how much of that D&D information we can add to the Wikipedia for everyone to use. Remember, the Wikipedia exists for encyclopedic entries, not simple definitions. So, try to either create a page with greater than 10 sentences or add to a stub page that already exists.

Also, be sure not to add any copyrighted information to the Wikipedia.

I added some info to their stub page on Orcus...

Feeling smug about knowing that you're enlightening those who stumble across those pages, I suppose.

I've editted tons of comic book and video game pages there already.

The main achievement would be helping to create a resource for those who wish to know the history of various D&D elements/figures. This sort of stuff is pretty useful for creating campaign material.

A secondary achievement would be to record this information. Some day all the grognards will be gone, and the collective story of D&D will be diminished by the loss of that information.

Thirdly, you'd be making D&D more visible in the world in general. Those who discover information on other related topics may find something that piques their interest in the world of D&D.

In all probability, clogging wikipedia with articles that will voted for deletion for being irrelevant to a general audience. Wikipedia ia already generous with hobbyists as it is.

If you want an RPG reference wiki, host your own, folks.

An RPG reference wiki, why didn't someone think of that?

I don't think this is a good idea. D&D articles would be largely irrelevant to a general audience. An encyclopedia isn't supposed to contain information that is so much specific. Check out Tarrasque Wrangler's link instead; that's the right place.

Firstly, a LARGE number of stub articles already exist for D&D related material. Adding to these articles is not going to increase the chances they get deleted. Not adding to them WILL increase the chance they get deleted. Secondly, a person who searches for Demogorgon or Deck of Many Things deserves D&D information as a response.

Wikipedia is not being "generous" with hobbyists, it's satisfying its goal to capture human knowledge. If it can contain cliff notes on various books, it can contain information on D&D settings (and already does... Try searching on illithid). You wouldn't find HALF the weird crap you see in Wikipedia in a normal encyclopedia.

Don't go fill normal English words with D&D information, I agree. But D&D terms and names? Those are absolutely fair game.
