The early 2000s was the peak of "throw content online for free; it'll work out financially somehow." Depending on what they paid freelancers at that point, it definitely could have been a money pit for them.
 


Maybe. The question is whether that paid off for them enough to justify the work involved.
This is the big thing in my mind. And not that they weren't able to make money off of it, but the return on investment of having someone on payroll or paying on a per article basis is nowhere near as cheap as getting the unwashed masses to post 3rd rate D&D memes for free.

The people at the top have a different set of goals and incentives than the people using the services.
