D&D Mass Combat rules question...

Are there any mass combat rules on could use w/ D&D? What I am interested in is playing individual PCs during a war with hundreds or thousands of soldiers running around. The problem is, I don't want to roll 1000 d20's to see if everyone hits. The other problem is, I don't want the PCs to die so quickly if an "army" of enemies decides to attack them. Perhaps this is covered in DMG2 (which I do not own)?

Hi!

What about WotC's "Heroes of Battle"?

This supplement for the D&D game reveals the pivotal roles characters can play in the midst of great battles. With rules and options for creating or playing adventures on and around battlefields, Heroes of Battle plunges characters into wartime situations and challenges them with climactic battles of epic proportions.

Kind regards

Several options, actually.

Mongoose has a mass combat system in their product line (I know the revised version appears in Book of Strongholds & Dynasties, but I am not sure where else it appears).

Malhavoc has Cry Havoc, a book on adding war to your D&D games. It has a pretty comprehensive system.

AEG has Empire, a book on managing domains that includes mass combat rules.

WotC has a kind-of mass combat rules set in the Miniatures Handbook, but it entirely minis oriented and most people don't consider it "mass" enough for what they want in a true mass-combat system.

WotC also has Heroes of Battle, as noted. This one is a bit different, as it does not include any true Mass Combat rules. Instead, it focuses on how the PCs actions could affect a large battle taking place in the background.

Green Ronin's Advanced Player's Manual uses the rules from Cry Havoc.

Green Ronin's Testament offers a mythic type of Mass Combat system, where the heroes are able to defeat units of soldiers single-handedly. The related book, the Trojan War, offers a revision to 3.5 if I recall correctly.

The quintessential FIghter

Eden's Fields of Blood is also a good source.

WotC really has no good mas combat rules, unless there are some in the Minatures rules (I don't have those and Heroes of Battle seems to rely on those).

The Birthright Campaign Setting (BRCS) at Birthright.net (site is temporarily down though :( ) has soem also (and its free when you can get there.

Just use the people around the characters, everything else is mainly based on the size of the army, their power, ect., ect. If the characters do good in the battle, the enemy will press on but be cautious of them and the characters allies, because they will have trouble with allies of a powerful enemy, even if those allies are level 1 warriors and such.

You may want to take a look at Heroes of Battle. While it does not contain mass combat rules it does include lots of ideas of how to turn the battlefield into a place to adventure. It might be just what you are looking for.

Heroes of Battle does not rely on the Minitures Handbook at all. The system in the Heroes of Battle is not a mass combat system, however it does allow PCs to interact with the battlefield.

Some like it, some don't.
