D&D mindset in other games

You alllllmost got it.

"Are you looting? Are you looting? ARE YOU LOOTING? There's no looting! THERE'S NO LOOTING IN BASEBALL!"

This makes me think we need a word that means "to kill and loot." Pillage? Maraud? Adventure? Or do we need a new word? Kloot? I am a murdarauder, what murderauds at midnight? C'mon, linguaphiles of roleplaying, let's get cracking!

One of the people I've been playing with for a long while now regularly makes sure that our D&D games don't turn into "kill things and take their stuff" by playing a paladin who insists on "kill things and take their stuff back to it's rightful owner". And when he isn't, his wife is.

The odd thing is, put him into any other game and regardless of what it is he's going to be one of the most selfish and mercenary people you could find. He can find an excuse to make his Jedi into a money-grubbing mercenary.

All my game groups through the decades all got together to play D&D first. All my game groups eventually played other games too, but invariably, the D&D mindset (kill monster, take treasure) reared its head in our non-D&D campaigns.

Do you find this? Do you see the D&D mindset in Players regardless of the game and setting?

Have you ever seen Players come into D&D, for the first time, with other mindsets -- like not attacking the bad guys on sight, not looting bodies, and not searching for secrets passages?

Which D&D? The mindset and style of play have changed dramatically over the years.

To vike. As in "let's go viking." "We viked the Keep on the Shadowfell." "Raistlin decided to vike the Abyss."

George Carlin found the substitute word years ago.

Call of Cthulhu fixes everything. :)

Why yes, you find powerful magical items. Books full of spells! Guns - this is the 20s, man! You can order tommy guns out of the Sears catalogue.

Yes. There's a very clear divide in the mindset between those of my friends who started out using (A)D&D on one hand and those who started out using Basic Role-Playing games, Warhammer or Vampire on the other.

The first group have clear difficulties viewing "defeat" as something other than a clear negative to be avoided at all costs.

The second group is much more open to loss as a character-building experience and thus a net positive for the play session.

My son once played a LARP (IFGS) on an all-Kender team. Of course, IFGS is supposed to be played like D&D, but they overdid it a bit. After the 4th encounter the GMs stopped them and sternly asked them what they might have under their cloaks and in their pockets. It seems the next team was preparing to start the course, and the first 3 encounters discovered most of their props had gone missing...
