D&D Miniatures retirement of sets

I'm not sure about that... all three currently play a role in determining a figure's price on the secondary market. Skirmishers make up a larger section of the market than you give them credit for. Have you seen the price of DCoLs, HEBIs, and Orc Champions?

I think they won't take much of a hit, though. The high priced tournament figs are certainly at the top of the list for the "all-star" set.

I will predict you will see a flood of threads on the miniature boards complaining that WotC didn't update their favorite figure so that it is "tournament worthy."

"Why didn't you update Drizzt so that I can play him in tournaments and kick butt?"

The high priced minis are almost exclusively driven by collectors and RPers. The skirmish effect on prices peaks shortly after their release, and then plummets.

This is interesting. very few minis from the first 2 years see much serious tournament play anyway, and the cards free as a pdf is a good option for me. This gives them "a chance" to recost and fix minis that aren't useful today. We could end up with many, many more useful minis than we have today. Man, I wish I could chat with all the minis geeks, but all the rest of them went to Gen Con....

I think you are essentially correct, but I also believe that skirmishers affect the value of some long OOP figs that are or were skirmish-worthy - like the Orc Champ, DCoL and a few others.

Heh. This gets around the whole set rotation thing, though. At least for another few years. :)

I don't use the figures for the Scirmish game but this is what got me to quit Hero Clix. Oh well.

The arrival of 4e is a major PITA for me at this point. sigh.

Very little. Their prices are driven by role-players' and collectors' demand, and not skirmishers' demand.

Yes, but I'm going to be watching the secondary market for a flood of plastic from skirmishers.

I think how big an effect this will have will be dependent on how many older minis are considered "all-stars". If there are a lot of them then it won't matter too much. If it is only 2-3 in each set then it will have a bigger effect.

Somewhere I saw an approximate number of figures that would be updated and figured the skirmish fans would jump on it. Apparently they are too busy ranting and didn't see the comment because they aren't discussing it. I'm pretty sure in was either in the 4th edition discussion or the WotC blog page.

Edit: Oops, found the number. 60 is the number. That's from 11 sets, so we get about 5 1/2 per set.

That's not a whole lot really. I imagine that the tier 1 warbands would cover those 60 quite easily. I guess if the mini is pre-Unhallowed and not super competitive at a tournament level, there is little to no chance of it being updated.

I agree. In searching for this I found out they said they would consider a second "wave" of updates if there was demand. No idea about any details beyond that.
