[D&D Minis] First War Drums preview up

Well they can keep making them until I get everyone I want.
How will I know that ? When a set comes out and I don't want any.

Okay, here's my thought. Good lord, do they need to put out another set? How many more do they expect people to buy? I know I am getting pretty tired of the whole setup. Why not do something novel and sell some 3d terrain or something? I just think the number of sets they are doing is getting ridiculous.

Sorry, didn't mean to rain on the parade here.

That's why I'm so sick of dwarves. And humans. And elves.

Because you're right - we have a lot of those.

There are still many "iconic" monsters that haven't been released yet, such as the marilith, pit fiend, and hydra. I think you'll see a slowdown eventually (and sooner rather than later), but probably not until most, if not all, of the Monster Manual creatures are out.

I haven't even seen any Underdark in this country yet!

DERAIL: Now, I'm operating up in deepest, darkest Scotland, and my FLGS in Glasgow has had plenty of Underdark in. I've yet to pick up any, but I recognise a grey box with Drow on it when I see it! :>

Alas, the online site I oft use for RPG purchases, http://www.gameslore.co.uk, doesn't have any UNderdark in stock, so I dunno what to suggest.

Back on topic: I think whining about "OMG MORE DWARVES!!!!!1111111111!!!One!" is a bit unfair when the two figures being shown of are, um, quite different sub-races for different alignments. Crucially, the enlarged Duregar figure both looks funky, and serves a valid RPG purpose; and the Derro finally puts a modern picture to that race which has gone somewhat unloved in 3rd ed.

I agree neither of thsee figures are really filling me with excitement at the thought of this set: for me at least, neither of these races crop up in my campaign. But they do so many previews for these sets, which need to cover all kinds of bases. The miniatures game players (which can be further subdivided: I assume "constructed" and "draft" exist, much like they do in CCG, as well as players of different factions) and the RPG players (with vastly differing needs depending on being a DM/PC, their campaign world of choice, their play level, etc) look for different things: is it any wonder, sometimes a preview will not knock you off your feet? :p

OKay, this is probably going to show how out of touch I am with D&D these days, but what is a marilith and what makes it an "iconic" monster?

I love dwarves, but In the D&D mini game, they are over-represented. Maybe it is fallout from each alignment comprising 1/4 to 1/5 of each release since few monsters are lawful good and monster that have converted are not that “common” . Hell, I would not mind a flumph in D&D minis for lawful good as long as it looked alien enough[thus usable in RPG use in numerous ways.] :]

These ones are cool since they are reasonably different. As an added bonus, one can apply some cheap flesh paint to the duergar for an enlarged 'normal' dwarf.

Before you poke fun at the people sick of dwarves in D&D minis, look at the blasted figure galleries.

Someone did a numeric comparison of the races, and the dwarves were less numerous than humans or elves (I think...). The rarity index of the dwarves has a lot to do with how many people have, and since there are so few LG humanoids (compared to the huge variety of evil humanoids) there is not much to choose from. Dwarves or humans. Not much else. Gods forbid they make some more gnomes, aasimars, halflings, etc...

Anyways, back on track.. I like these new minis! I'm looking forward to the derro especially since they are not commonly thought about. I can finally have accurate representatives when I run the campaign where the PCs face off against derro and orcs.

'course, that's only for my game. I can't speak for other groups..

Marilith is a demon (used to be Type V, I believe?) that has 6 arms and is usually depicted with a weapon in each hand. Here's a picure of one in front of a balor demon:

I use "iconic" in this instance to denote what I would consider a signature D&D monster. That is, one that has been around since 1st edition and well-used in many D&D games.

Certainly, your experiences may differ.

Yeah, the Type 5 Demon and all those other Type demons would be iconic IMO.
