D&D 5E D&D Next is a crappy name.

I have no problem with 5E or D&D Next.

And after calling it that for the last few months, those ARE its names for me, whatever they eventually come up with.

I don't think WotC actually came up with D&D Next; I believe it started as a fan-created hashtag on twitter in response to WotC calling it the next iteration of the game.

I remember back in the day, shortly after 4th Edition was released, someone from Wizards said something to the effect of "there will never be a fifth edition." So I wonder if the D&D Next tag is related to that somehow.

IIRC, that was the D&D brand manager Scott Rouse, though the quote was that 'there will be no 4.5. It is 4th Edition.' or something very similar. Then Essentials hit in very rapid order thereafter.

The whole "Next" label is just a marketing thing. There's nothing wrong with calling it "Fifth Edition"... except for the fact that there have been a lot more than five D&D editions.

Maybe they should just use the year published, like "D&D 2013". At the rate new editions have been coming out over the last decade or so, it might be more convenient than trying to remember what edition number we're currently on.

It positively screams corporate jingoism.

Might as well call it D&D eXtreMe EdiTioN.

*facepalm*

Have these people actually met their core audience?

D&D Next: Dungeons and dragons GONE WRONG!!!!

Yeah. Shoot for somethong a little more dignified. Or.. Heavens help us respectable even.

D&D Master Edition
D&D Omni Edition
Or take off the edition...

Just call the damn game dungeons and dragons.

'corporate jingoism'?

That doesn't even make sense.

D&D Next is simply a temporary nickname for the next edition. That is NOT what it will actually be called. I highly recommend reading through Morrus 5e info link at the top of this thread and the original news posts and links from the original announcement a couple months ago and it will give you a much clearer picture on what's going on with 5e.

After the abortion that was 4e I could believe it.

You are, of course, allowed to not like it. No problem there.

But there's a point at which expressions of such become inflammatory. A point where one-line, otherwise non-constructive expressions of such become threadcrapping, that make the discussion worse for pretty much everyone.

Please, folks, stop short of such things. Thanks.
