D&D 5E D&D Next is a crappy name.

I don't think WotC actually came up with D&D Next; I believe it started as a fan-created hashtag on twitter in response to WotC calling it the next iteration of the game.

WotC made it clear to those that it could reach that they would appreciate it if we would not call it D&D 5E. Primarily because they have no idea yet what the actual name of the next edition will be.

Then a poster started using, as you mentioned above, #DNDNext on twitter (ampersands break hashtags on twitter) and it stuck.

They could always go with Crystal D&D. The books would all have translucent acrylic covers in varied colors.

I say they should make some kind of acronym for it. Like... Potentially Unrivalled Rules Release - P.U.R.R., or Truly Awesome Game System - T.A.G.S., or maybe Dungeons And Dragons. Dang that doesn't spell anything, obviously they can't use THAT. Finding out what this name should be can be called T.H.W.A.P. - The Hilarious Whimsical Acronmym Project. Or T.H.A.C.O. - Temporary Hopeful Acronym Creativity Operation.

Maybe they'll follow Apple's lead and just call it "the new Dungeons & Dragons"?

I'm having a hard time grasping what all the commotion is about. "D&D Next" seems about as neutral a name as you could have, and it's not even the official name for the new edition.

If they were calling it "D&D Edge" or "D&D Extreme" I could sort of see the frustration, but "D&D Next" is pretty milquetoast.

I think if they decide to call 5e "D&D Next", then I think we need to reconsider how we refer to older editions so that we don't cause confusion.
