Indeed. (I work in market research, btw.)
Furry's guesses are probably on the money. A panel like that takes some effort and expense to maintain (even if they weren't paying you panelists anything), and if they decided that they weren't using it as much as they though they would when they set it up, or that they could get the same kinds of answers from other sources, then, it's a logical decision to shut it down.
Given the small number of surveys you guys were asked to take, and the apparently simplistic nature of them, I have a feeling they just felt they weren't using it enough to justify continuing it.
At least they were nice enough to let you know.
