Man, this was a hard one. I can see valid reasons to kick off both elves and dwarves. They are both prone to terrible cliches. I give humans an exemption from the cliche problem because the human cliches are at least believable.
For me, one of the elves' biggest problems is their lifespan. You have 70-year-old elves just starting their careers; what are they, retarded? Dwarves have a somewhat similar problem but not as pronounced. Then there are all the special elvish PrC's which all seem to be about one thing: shooting arrows. Arcane Archer, Deepwood Stalker, etc. How many elvish archer PrC's do we need?
Meanwhile, dwarves are just munchkinny. Plus the "arrr I speak with a vaguely scottish accent" thing gets very tired. And it seems like every dwarf in existance is the last remaining member of a destroyed clan.
