If this isn't a sign that 3E's got some problems, I don't know what is.

I would worry about a rules set that DOES think it can handle every possible situation in the core...

So it might be like a Feat, Skill, Mundane Equipment, and maybe Base Class compilation from various Complete books and other sources?

Maybe they should do a Monster compendium that collects up monsters from various non-Monster-Manual sources...

RE The Rules Compendium. VERY interesting. I wonder if they are going to put all of the major rules options from the splats into one place.

Potentially VERY interesting. What we need is information...

<Prisoner>By hook or by crook, we'll get it!</Prisoner>

I think they would lose a good number of sales for those products if 4E were announced prior to their release and sell-through quarter. I think each new product such as this pushes back the expectation of the announcement and release of the inevitible 4E.

How so? Maybe WOTC is releasing a basic version of the rules in this book and that would be no different than what TSR was doing with the Basic/Advanced line split except that in this case I think it may be more compatible with the regular edition, if indeed that is the case.

But I agree, it could just be a compilation of various rules from various sourcebooks like the Fear, Terror and Horror rules from Heroes of Horror etc.

For some reason, I have a feeling this thing is going to be more along the lines of 1E's Unearthed Arcana....a compilation of rules/options that are now considered CORE and part of the standard rules....

One advantage is so that WOTC (and Dungeon/Dragon) can diversify a bit in future products...instead of having to not use Feat X or Prestige Class Y or Optional combat variant Z from The Complete Doofus in an adventure or whatnot....

Interesting. I'm guessing it has all the rules introduced in the non-core books (such as the environment rules from said series, any rules introduced in the complete series, any rules introduced in the racial series, any rules introduced Dragon that the writer thinks interesting enough to also place in the book, etc. Perhaps it will also have a concise version of the basic rules for chapter one in this compendium. Maybe it will even have a few new rules, but somehow I doubt that.
