D&D Tactics Sounds Good!

This really needs to come out for the DS, I don't think I can really justify buying a PSP for one game.

With this and the re-issue of Final Fantasy Tactics.....maybe....

D&D Tactics will feature both cooperative and competitive multiplayer modes. Deathmatch mode will let you pit your party against that of a friend, while dungeon bash mode will let you team up with other players to fight your way through a level.

VERY cool. Definitely looking like something I could get...

Any news on a DS version? That's something I might spring for at a cheap rate.

+1.

Oh, and for useful content in this post: Any recommendations for tactical games on the DS?

I had a lot of fun with Final Fantasy Tactics on my GBA (though, I admit, I got bored and gave up 50 hours in), and have heard good things about the Advance Wars series...

The original version of FFT for the PS was probably my favorite game for that console.

This sounds like an interesting game but I can't see myself buying a PSP so that I can play it.

Advance Wars DS is excellent but is not an RPG.

The Fire Emblem series is pretty eh.

Watch for Heroes of Mana and another FFT(I -think-) on the DS.

In all honesty, there aren't that many tactical RPGs for the DS, despite the double-screen setup actually being useful for that kind of thing.

If only they'd release it for the PC. Idon't have a game console, and I'm not getting a game console for one game, portable or not.

If you're interested in the genre, rather than just the name, you really should look into a console. Turn-based tactics games with RPG elements comprise a staple, if niche, genre for all the Playstation line and the Nintendo portables. You definitely wouldn't be getting just one game in this genre on any of those systems.

A Playstation 2 would give you access to about two dozen turn-based tactical games with varying degrees of RPG elements (and of course, varying degrees of quality ;) ) between PS1 and PS2 games.

A GBA would give you access to at least eight that I know of, and I freely admit I'm not familiar with the whole GBA lineup; I've only played a few, and those on a Game Boy player because I can't see the screen well. ;)

A DS or a PSP, not so many because they're younger systems. As with any portable that doesn't have a console player yet, I don't know the numbers very well. I do know there's an enhanced port of Final Fantasy Tactics coming to the PSP, so that and D&D Tactics make at least two turn-based tactical games.

And to an earlier poster, no, portables are not considered consoles. The two are very much separate markets (Sony, for example, was said to 'dominate the console industry for two generations' while Nintendo's GameBoy and its kin remained competitive with or more successful than the PS1 and PS2). A console is a game machine that hooks up to your TV.

Maybe not what you'd consider tactical, but I've been having great fun with PuzzleQuest -- an RPG where combat is resolved by playing a puzzle game.

Coming for the PSP, lets you create 6 characters and seems to adhere to 3e rules pretty well.

And it has Psions and Psychic Warriors as character options!

Everytime *I* post a message like this, it gets bumped to the wasteland forum of "D&D Software and Applications" (or whatever the hell it's called).

At any rate, let's hope this thread survives here in General.

As to the content, yes, I am VERY pumped about D&D Tactics. But I would really like to see a version for consoles, either the PS2 or, more likely, the next-gen consoles, in particular the Xbox 360.

PS3? What the hell is that? :] (but that's a whole different thread. :lol: )

May I suggest The Battle for Wesnoth?

* Free, open-source
* runs on the Big Three (linux, mac, windows)
* turn-based strategy
* simple rules with subtle gameplay
* RPG elements
* medeival fantasy
* multiple factions (elves, orcs, humans, dragons, dwarves)
* several good single-player campaigns
* good multiplayer support
* active player & modder community

Also, GalaxyMage is starting to look pretty good; it's a tactical RPG that's free & open-source.
