D&D Teams...?

Scribble

First Post
Something I was thinking about...

4e seems to really promote teamwork, and team synergistics. If the DDI Tabletop can get up and running, I can see something interesting happening.

D&D Teams... Like people on the Tabletop "trying out" others in order to grow the perfect team... Wich would be especially prevelan if they do like tournement style play again... Can your group surive the dungeons of blah blah blahhhhh?

It makes sense to me on an RP level too... Almost feels more real to me. I mean if you're a group that makes a living going into deep dark places under the earth to risk their life fighting monsters and finding treasure, wouldn't you want the best people you can find? Wouldn't you hold auditions and interviews?

Maybe your team can be ranked...

Prizes awarded for the best teams.

I guess DM's would have to be paid at that point though... because if the players are getting prizes what would be the incentive for the DM to DM... (Aside from love of the game...)

Shrug... Just day dreaming.

Look up XCrawl.

You might find what you want there :)

Is that that d20 game that was kind of supposed to be a dungeons sporting event?

I know about that... I'm talking about in Real life though...

See the big thing I think is the idea of the internet. For the first time, it's really simple for a team to get together from all parts of the world. You'd really be able to build your team based on who you thought was the best, as opposed to who was available to game...

It could potentially push it closer to an idea like sports. You get togetehr with your friends, and play D&D just like you would get together to play a game of baseball or football..

But then one day you realize you're "good enough" to try out for one of the "teams" you've seen on DDI...

I know Magic tounements became big money for a while... (are they still I don't know?)

Could you imagine D&D tournements becoming big money deals?

Nothing promotes a hobby like the ability to win money.

It could be interesting. We do have the D&D Open, though.. but it's limited in where it's run. I'd be curious how you'd run it, though :)

Sign me up :) Only.. not through the $15/month DDI with the extra cost for minis.

Wouldn't be 15 a month... Just like Xbox online isn't as much if you buy it all year.

Also if you're winning money, then extra costs aren't so relvent... Like when you're a sports team... You buy extra stuff to up your game all the time.

hey, maybe you're even sponsored! :D

Oh, it'll average out to $15 a month when you have to pay for minis too :)

Shrug.

Dungeon tiles plus boxes of minis cost roughly the same if not more.

It's not so much different. If you don't see a value in it, then you won't buy it... I won't try to convince you you're wrong in any way. :p

But people will buy it. And I'm saying if there's a way to make money off of it... People will buy it even more.

But thats not really what I wanted to talk about.. :D

I'm just jivin on the idea of D&D teams, and for the first time seeing it being an "easy" thing to happen now.

The DDI making tournement play more of a reality...

I have to say, I think this sort of thing would be an extremely bad idea.

One of the good things about D&D and RPGs in general is that they are NOT competative sports, with all the pathetic rivalry and bitterness associated with such sports, and they don't have that sick feeling that you're only "amateurs", not "pros" at it, either.

If WotC started officially "ranking" D&D teams, well, I don't know what I'd do, but I can assure you that it would mean WotC getting less of my money. I play D&D as an RPG, not as a competative sport.

The cool thing about RPGs though is even if they DID starta competitive side to them, you can still play them the same old way you always did, while people who DID want to be competitive could be. Win win.

In anycase, I can see it happening, not even as something pushed... I;m reall just saying I can see it starting just through human nature.

Because people have access to lots of gamers online (if DDI is a sucess) they can sort of pick and chose their games and game groups.)

Lots of people like to compete, so there will be competitions, whether it's pushed or not.

Popularity of competetions could lead to more organized competetions, and ultimately cash money! :D

But how would you play competitively?

Let me twist the question.. what's stopping this from happening NOW? :P I have uber competitive friends. What stops our game from one night every month , instead of being the campaign, being the "D&D National League" thing?

How would you run that? I'm serious. We can do this thing now, if we have honest players.
