D&D 4E D&D4E = Totally Anime

I'm going to have to check your geek credentials after a comment like that! Dragonball Z teamwork consisted "let me fight him one on one!" "okay!" (or possibly of Krillin exploding to buff Goku).

Heh. Yeah, saying something like "Lets all attack him together!" on that show roughly translated to "We're all useless anyway, so lets hurry up and have the bad guy kill 12 of us by the end of the episode so we can spend the next 27 episodes on the real fight.

Of course, Dragonball was the trendsetter, so it's allowed to be horribly cliche. The overall trend since then seems to be having all the minor characters fight each other and then letting the hero beat up the "boss" villian. (Which still isn't teamwork really. It's just not neglecting 3/4ths of your characters. )

Eh, Back to D&D. I agree that it's easy to find simularities if you're an anime fan, but I think the overall change is leaning more towards cinematic in general, including comic books and movies and even novels. More cinematic+more tactical seems like a huge win to me.

Good point... but in addition to the "NOOO! NOT KRILLIN!" second-wind moments, they *do* "tap out" to a certain extent like tag-team wrestlers. :) And everyone dies and comes back as much as a high-level D&D campaign...

As long as the fundamental assumptions of D&D absolutely guarantee that a guy with no armor and a katana is complete crap, it will not be anime.
Roll on Oriental Adventures 4E....

I always have a good chuckle when people truck out the 'DnD is getting more Anime!' argument.

You mean it's creating more opportunities for better roleplaying and characterization than the usual cartoon drivel? I'd call that a plus.

The PCs are hard as nails and throwing fireballs about like candy? There are spells that can level cities? A fighter is tougher than the fortification he's standing on? This has been true in DnD since 1E.

Personally, I think DnD has influenced Anime to a great extent. If you don't believe me, watch The Slayers. Lina Inverse should be the poster-child for the average greedy, insanely powerful, DnD PC wizard (with Fighter training feats).

Lodoss War == what gamers think they're playing

Slayers == what gamers are actually playing

I have managed to pull off Lodoss War games before, it is hard... But you simply count the funny sessions where none of the plot gets involved as "non-campaign" and your good :)

I wouldn't mind seeing an anime themed D&D version using the new rules. Might be a good entry for a new company or one of the current manufacturers under the GSL. They did a d20 version of BESM, maybe they will update it to 4e making a setting as I doubt WotC would allow them to do like before.
If Canada-based Guardians of Order can be resurrected.

I doubt White Wolf (current distributor of BESM Tri-Stat) is interested in riding the GSL bandwagon.

Note that Slayers does have non-funny episodes too....
