D&D 5E D&D's official math...

Monster AC is always set to give the PCs a 65% chance to hit assuming the PC put their highest stat in their main attack stat, and increased it at 4th and 8th level. The only entry on the create a monster chart that doesn't follow this exactly is level 9.

In breaking down the monster math from the link above I noticed that monsters' full allotment of average DPR is equal to the average PC hit points when comparing CR to PC level. The average PC hit points being the listed max at 1st level plus the listed average by level but ignoring any potential CON modifier to hit points. Mosnter hit points are also almost exactly 3x their full allotment of average DPR.

These both track exactly with statements made by WotC during the 4E era and printed in their books. Specifically that monsters should take 3-4 hits to take down and that is borne out by the analysis of Blog of Holding.

My 5e minion rules.

Minions are defined by tier
AC = 11 + proficiency bonus
HP, Attack Bonus and Damage = proficiency bonus x 2
No damage on a successful save

Cool. Thanks for the post. I was hoping this thread would be uncovering the official math of the game.

Monster math, and the way the prof bonus is baked into things, should be the relatively straightforward part.

Its always the PCs and their damage were it gets hairy. 5e seems to assume a lot of rounds of combat per day, to get PC damage to average out.

Not sure how this interfaces with the monster math, but it must!
