d20 Eighties

Funny thing is, a couple of years ago, I started working on a game called "HEROES OF THE NEW WAVE", which was described as "Neo-pulp Adventures in the 1980s".

Had a blog describing the design process: http://new-wave.blogspot.com/

Changed my mind about doing it as a stand-alone game, thought about doing it as an M&M Superlink product instead.

Now, I've got a few folks requesting that I release it as a D20 Modern supplement, as a spin off from our THRILLING TALES pulp line.

I remember you talking about that over on rpg.net. Sounded to me like you had a lot of good ideas. I was looking forward to it...and I'd particularly like to see it done for d20 Modern [or some kinda d20, anyway].

Do THRILLING TALES: 80s! But only if you include rules for mullets, Jersey mall hair, and Flock of Seagulls hair. :)

We'll need a prestige class for hair bands too.

Things to keep in mind for an 80s campaign:

Saddam Hussein was our ally. Osama Bin Laden was our ally.

People awaited new Star Wars films with excited anticipation.

Computers ran MS-DOS. People still used 5.25" floppies. Bulletin board systems were the predecessor to the Web.

Everybody wanted to know who shot JR.

The Challenger disaster was what we considered a horrible tragedy (pre-9/11).

Cable TV, VCRs and CDs were the epitome of entertainment technology. CNN and MTV were started.

Yuppies were the stereotype of the decade.

The Atari 2600 was really, really cool.

Countries boycotted Olympic Games.

The UK went to war with Argentina. The US invaded Grenada.

Everybody thought the Japanese economy would crush the U.S.

New wave, rap and hair bands became very popular.

Pastel t-shirts, legwarmers, and sweaters around the waist were common, as were severe-looking women's suits with massive shoulder pads.
