[d20 Future] extra gear as level adjustment

I'm starting a new d20 future campaign. Two of my players want to play cyborgs, and one wants to play a robot. I'm letting them buy their starting attachments/robot equipment based on their character's starting wealth. Now, I once mentioned in passing that to get a lot of gear, one could take a level adjustment. My robot player wants to take me up on that.

So, my question is, if a player wanted to trade in a starting level for extra gear, how should I handle it? I don't want to simply say "no way" - I want to offer an option, even if it's not particularly attractive. However, I guess the wealth system has me stymied. Any thoughts?

Something like this is better done by your own rule of thumb. The formula I use might not be good for you, but here's a little.

For each level traded in for starting gear, they gain the following:

+1 BAB cyberware
+4 Skill bonus cyberware
+1 Save bonuses on each of the saves.
+1 Defense bonus for cyberware, advanced gear.

That's how I handled it.
