Phobos Incedent Observation Station:

In a remote section of the galaxy, a backwater system was discovered about 500 years ago. Named Phobos by the Imperial Scout team which first detected and investigated the system, the mainworld of the system was discovered to contain an emerging humanoid intelligent species of a Stone Age-equivalent tech level. The system was interdicted, and a Scout-run space station, the Incedent, was placed into orbit around the mainworld to use as a base while Scouts and Academics studied the emerging species.

Little is known about the P'wtang, the humanoid species, or about Phobos, as all information has been classified highly restricted access by Imperial decree.

Mellafleur Bocachica

"I don't think so," hissed the yazarian.

"You ain't gonna get a better deal anywhere else," countered the dralasite.

Yalas had been looking everywhere for a 2210VS Magrin gauss pistol, including Forgone Station and the House of the Universe, with no luck. Only a few prototypes had been made and they, as the old saying went, 'were as good as gold.' But the sly dralasite, known to most as Mell, knew what she had, and wasn't going to let anyone slide for less than a cool Cr300.000.

Yalas growled, but held himself from showing his teeth. "Do you take me for a Terran monkey? That kind of price is for fools."

"It's a steal. In fact, it's the sale of the %3@*& millenium," bellowed Mell, whose patience seemed to be waning. "You know it's worth ten times that to certain people. Besides, the simple fact is that I have what you want, and if you don't pay what I'm asking, I will find those certain people."

For a moment, Yalas glared at Mell as if he could burn through her with his eyes. Then suddenly, his gaze relaxed, and he pulled out his ID chip and tossed it to Mell. "This better be worth it," he muttered.

Mell scanned the chip, and Yalas punched his code into the scanner, approving the transaction. The dralasite then pulled out a black case from a concealed panel in the floor and placed it on the table next to them, motioning for Yalas to open it. Yalas pressed on the silvery clasps, and the case popped open. His eyes went wide as he looked on one of the most dangerous weapons in the galaxy. He closed the case with a snap, snatched it up, and headed for the door.

"Pleasure doing business with you," called Mell as what may have been a dralasite smile crossed her face.

Without looking back, Yalas raised a hand, and said, "The pleasure was all yours."

Back in his ship, Yalas plotted a course off the god-forsaken asteroid known as Bocachica, and through the field to safer space.

A smile slowly crept across the yazarians face. "No one ever said that dealing with Mellafleur was easy, but if that was hard, maybe I'll rethink trying to fly through a black hole." He flicked a few switches, kicked in the engines of his one-man fighter, and took off like a shot for his next stop, the Eye of Ral. It was there he would encounter the real challenge.

The Eye of Ral

The Eye of Ral is a portion of the asteroid belt known as the Gods-Form, an unusual galactic location that seems to have once been a system of planets around a dead sun. The belt is unusual in that upon various hunks of rock that still orbit around the sun, a star that paraphysicists call the Lonesome God, are engraved with symbols of religious value to almost all of the known sentient races in the universe, and many races heretofore unknown.

The Eye of Ral is one such asteroid. The Eye is simply a ring of stone and metals that is empty in the center, shaped very much like its namesake. Ral, the patron god of the Devinisharr, is a god of vision and the sense and it is said that he can peer into the All Worlds, a dimension of portals and pathways.

Of course no one who actually has heard of the Eye of Ral believe in that nonsense, but still... something primal keeps most away from the Eye's ever vigilant gaze....

Jacobson's Folly

Jacobson's Folly is the nickname for hyperspace jumps that don't have enough planning behind them. When faster-than-light drive was first discovered, there was an inevitable rush to create the first FTL ship for personal use. The ultra-religious billionaire Gary Jacobson was the first to succeed. To much public ridicule, he loaded up his clan and headed out into space to found a new nirvana. He was never heard from again.

But he's still out there.

There's a planet with inbred families and strict religious doctrine, natives that worship their still-living degenerate cyborg-elder as a near God. Jacobson found his nirvana. . . and lord help any space traveler who blunders into it.

The Corps Of Balgos

The Corps (pronounced 'corpse') of Balgos is the nick name given to the XI Marine Batalion of the Colonial Company of Tristar. The nickname came from the period during the Settlement War that saw the entire combat arm of the XI Marines wipped out during a three week engagment outside of the small minign town of Balgos. While the quartermaster and other support staff survived, the rest of the battalion was wiped out to a man by the detonation of a series of small nuclear warheads by the miners.

The XI Marines were reformed by the Colonial Company with new recruits after the end of the war, but the nickname has stuck, partciularly amongst the mining communities who see the destruction of the batalion as one of the few major victories of the conflict. The XI Marines themselves do not use the nickname.

FreeShip Manifold Destiny

The Colony Transport Freeship, Manifold Destiny has become something of a ghost story to scare new spacers. As the story goes, The Freeship Manifold Destiny entered its jump gate to arrive at the Frontier to begin to colonize Agrippa IV. The Ship never arrived. As the Jump Gate in the Agrippa system activated, the Manifold Destiny began to emerge from the jump gate but was halted in its progess and fell back into gate. The gate then flared and exploded.
There was not another sighting of the Manifold Destiny for another 75 years, until the rebuilt jump gate at the Agrippa system flared unexpectantly. A battered and scarred Manifold Destiny came thru. Agrippa station techs were able to remote guide the ship into a docking port. A heavily armed Marine unit boared the ship. As the airlock cycled shut, all communication was lost. 2 hours later, half the unit stumbled thru the airlock, firing wildly into the darkness. Moments after they escaped, the Mainfold Destiny disengaged from the docking station, refused all hails, and plunged thru the jump gate.
The Marines personal recording devices, which had been recording for a total of 12 hours, showed that there were no survivors of the crew and colonist. Ship logs were heavily damaged, but where ever the ship had been and the events that transpired on board, had been extremely violent. Entire rooms were covered in blood and gore. Entire skins were stretched and hung on walls. Insane writtings cover walls and hallways. Blaster marks scored the walls. What ever attacked the Marines, was never fully answered, as none of the remaining survivors were deamed sane enough to answer to an offical inquest. There have been other sightings of the Manifold Destiny over the years, and anyone who has gone abord to solve the mystery of this ship has disappeared. And as silently and quickly as the ship arrives, it disappears.

NEXT: THE PURGATORY RIFT

The Purgatory Rift
In 2467, a deep space probe encountered an anomoly unique in the galaxy. Two black holes, located only a few light years apart, had torn through the very fabric of space-time at a point equidistant between them.

Several probes were sent into the rift and all vanished instantly when they reached it. One of the technicians commented "surely the punishments of Purgatory would be better than to simply vanish from existance." Thus an anomoly was named.

In 2490, Purgatory Station was constructed as a scientific outpost to study the rift. So far the rift has been very reluctant to reveal any of its secrets and the duty there is so boring that being "sent to suffer in Purgatory" has become a joke in both the armed forces and scientific communities.

The Draxxus Nebula

The Draxxus Nebula

Originally, this region of space was deemed too hostile for Terran life to allow exploration. Early probes were lost completely, and later survey ships returned to inhabited space on autopilot filled with dead crew members and maddening logs of sickness and demented ravings by the recorded crew.

That wasn't terribly important for the first 900 years of space exploration by humanity, since the galaxy had provided many habitable planets in several different direction of space from Earth. None of the major "trade" routes even came close to the nebula.

A breakthrough in technology allowed many sleeper ships to be retired for true faster-than-light travel. But the crucial transuranium element required to power the drives was incredibly rare, with most stars having barely a thimble-full scattered throughout its entire system. Humanity's expansion hobbled along until 150 years ago, when Dillon Rax and Xerxes Verus innocently turned their foundation's radio telescopes toward this area of the sky from the edge of inhabited space to examine stellar phenomenon ... and found the nebula brimming with the legendary material. Due to a transmission error, the finding was filed with EarthGOV under a conglomeration of their names - DRaxXus. The nebula was soon renamed in "his" honor and a modern goldrush ensued.

Countless thousands of lives have been lost since, as people and crews pushed beyond their endurance to harvest the wealth. Many consciously traded physical deformities and mental incapacities for the untold wealth as they recovered the FTL element from this hazardous region. The nebula itself restrained FTL travel within it, until roughly 5 years ago suitable energy fields were designed that could penetrate that veil for traveling and which even dampened the debillitating effects on the body and mind. The nebula began to be deeply penetrated. Humanity seemed on the cusp of a true golden age of expansion.

Then we found the Phleshem, moon-sized plant-like creatures that thrived on the ambient "atmosphere" of the nebula. Early investigations uncovered a collecting effect by the plants and stores of tremndous concentrations of the element within. Mining colonies were soon formed to take advantage of the source under the plants' "bark". But the creatures were sentient, and the mining soon made them quite angry....

End transmission log.

Privateer 83 was sent to the Expanse to explore rumors of Coros remains in the area known as Zalin's Reach. Zalin, the well-known technomage, first explored this region of space in search of Coros signs. Also his last known whereabouts, this area has since been designated "Explored. Barren." by the Regency Scout Service, although this is untrue. Though Zalin disappeared, his logs were found to contain evidence of Coros remnants in the now designated System 24. The preceding log was the initial attempt to follow up on Zalin's discoveries by an RSS Privateer, who disappeared following the transmission.

The Exophage Council has now taken over all matters concerning Zalin's Reach, and as yet has not made any efforts to make further contact in System 24. All future inquiries should be directed to the Exophage Council.

End file.

Harlin's House

With the rise of the Humanists, the System Accords of 2200 essentially banned religion from everyday life. At that time, approximately 1% of the solar system still practiced an organized religion, from the neo-Meditationists on Titan's desolate plains to the Godkeepers in their eternal sleep near the Oort cloud. At that time, Harlin Duprey was a young man in seminary on Plaxin Station. While he understood why the people of the solar system were approaching a time of godlessness (persecution of Humanists by a variety of religious zealots being one of the main factors in a succession of wars over the last century), he believed what he believed and he believed that there was still a place for religion in people's lives.

That's why he founded Harlin's House. Not so much a house as a collection of cargo containers, decommissioned capital ships, and various system detritus spot-welded together, the House left the solar system ten years after the Humanist Accords took effect. On Harlin's House, all religious views are represented and respected; It's the law. Even the lack of religion is respected, if little understood by the other inhabitants. Though many expected the House to dissolve into internecine, the opposite has occurred. All the major religions have merged into a single tapestry of belief. Even those tenets that seem incompatible are explained away as the capriciousness of the higher being(s).
