D&D Miniatures Blister Pack
Or, if you're not into the collectible or wargaming aspect of them... Just buy a bunch of the cheap common D&D minis! For $10 you can easily pick 20 or more minis that are perfect for tabletop gaming. If you go with a blister, you'll only get 8 randomized minis for the same price...

There are quite a few very nice figures available from Reaper that cost less than $10. And if you paint the figure it even has the personal touch! (While a painted mini for a PC is nice, don't forget that the DMs have favorite NPCs too. :D )

The Auld Grump, guess what I give out every year....

One year (in 2000) I bought a Reaper Miniature for each of my gaming group; each mini was as close as possible to the character they played at the time. I think they liked it pretty well, even though they were unpainted (my mini painting skills lacks both patience and skill) :)

Mini blister pack
a couple of .pdfs
new dice bag
a few Reaper minis
one nice pewter figurine (sold in places like Noahs, and about mini sized, usually more detailed or jeweled)
Back issues of Dragon, Dungeon, or KODT
If you get creative at the craft store...$10 goes a long way towards table top game props...
If you get creative in a home goods store you can find a darn cool mini case
Gift certificate to gaming store, or a place like staples or a craft store where things that CAN be used in the game can be purchased
new dice

That is a pretty cool idea. I actaully have done something like that as a matter of course for some of my players. Either I found a mini I already had and painted it up to match their character for use in the game (I didn't actually give it to them) or a player has gone out and gotten a mini for their character and I've painted it for them.

I find it is really nice to have a mini that really represents a specific character, especially when it is painted with that character in mind.
