D20 Mass Combat

Wikidogre

First Post
Greetings, I am new to the boards, and have my first real question, how are all the other DM's out thier handling Mass combat. I am currently running a game in the FRealms, that entails 2 city-states that left Vaasa, for better lands in the unclaimed section of the weasterheartlands, only to come under attack by the Elves of Evereska. any ideas for handling mass combat would be nice.

Peace

I think AEG's War is out, but I recall that reviews weren't very positive on the mass combat rules part of it.

If you don't mind it DIY, abstract, and without miniatures, I'd expect you could draft a rather elegant system from converting oD&D's War Machine (found in the old Companion Boxed set, or the D&D Cyclopedia) to use D&D 3E's CR system.

Welcome!! Good to see more people from Columbus on these boards.

There are mass combat rules in Quintessial Fighter by Mongoose and War by AEG. From people's reaction, though, neither do everything people want.

Personally, I look at how much the PCs are going to be involved with and focus on that part. If the forces are about equal, then I put the PCs in a crucial place or allow them to do something crucial that will ultimately deside the battle. I like to keep things simple and focused on the characters.

Thanks, for the ideas, i do have War, but like you guys have stated, the mass combat rules lack highly. Also i do remember seeing a birthright d20 conversion, but lost the link, if anyone does have it, please drop it on, the boards.

Our group usually does mass combat by units of whatever quantity the forces are split into. The (PC)battle leader rolls for each unit (or groups of units if it's a really massive battle) just as he would for a normal attack.

Another way would be to have the PCs go directly against the leaders of the opposition to determine the flow of the battle.

There's another system coming out soon (early summer maybe) from one of the other d20 designers. Sorry can't remember the name but I'm sure someone else will post it. It supposed to be more Battlesystem based I think, with rules for kingdoms, raising armies etc.

Eden Studios, "Fields of Blood: The Book of War." Not due for some time, apparently. Look for user ID mattconville (or something like that...), he's the guy writing that, Waysides: The Book of Taverns, and one other.... They are all on my wish list. :)
