d20 Middle Earth "Eagle of the Star" (IC)

Halbarad jogs over to the fallen dwarf's horse and gently leads it away to ensure it doesn't stray near Thorongil as he ministers to the dwarf. He watches observantly but unobtrusively until Thorongil seems finished and then walks over to enquire, "Will he live?"

As the others gather around the wounded dwarf, Legolas checks the trees. The elf sees no sign of the men, except for a spot of blood upon the ground. A black spear, obviously dropped in haste by the retreating men lies nearby. Listening for a bit, it appears the attackers have fled.

As the rest look on, Thorongil tends to the dwarf. Unconscious, pale and breathing in shallow breaths, the rider looks near death. Wearing only plain brown clothes, with no armor or weapons, the dwarf bears an ugly piercing wound in his side.

Several long moments pass as Thorongil is able to stabilize the dwarf's condition. Although still unconsious pale, and weak, his breathing seems steadier.Concerned, Balin and Halbarad inquire, "Are yer alright? Can yer talk?".."Will he live?"

After the suddeness of the skirmish, a quiet descends upon the ford. The five gathered by the river are still 20 miles from Rivendell, and the sun begins to disappear beneath the horizon.

(OOC-Ok plans? time for introductions?)

Legolas grabs the spear dropped by the wildmenand puts it away for now, then walks back to the rest of the party to check on the dwarf's progress.

"So how is he doing?"

To the flury of questions, Thorongil ansewers "he is stabilized and will live if we can get him to shelter. So my friend I am Thorongil, and this is Halbarad. May I have your names?"

"Aye, I be Balin, Dwarf o' the mountains. 'Tis a pity we meet under such conditions!"

Balin turns to look at Legolas and Haldir, his face creasing into a grimace of either outrage or disbelief, maybe a bit of both.

"BAH! I shoulda known! When troubles about Elves are afoot!"

Ah, friend Dwarf", Halbarad chuckles good naturedly, "best not travel within Lord Elrond's domain if you wish not to cross the paths of Elves. For mine, I am grateful to see you both, if not for your steady hands we three would have been sorely pressed."

Halbarad pauses to look over the two Elves. "Both Thorongil and I are Rangers loyal to the line of Isildur and have travelled these parts before, but I do not recall having met either of you before."

Halbarad then turns to the flustered Dwarf, "and as for you master Balin, while it is a pleasure to make your acquaintance, coming across Dwarves in these parts is almost unheard of."

"Then you are just as far from home as our Dwarven companions, but well met friend Haldir."

Halbarad turns to Thorongil and muses, "It seems we are in esteemed company, lad. A message bearer from the lady of Lorien and a Dwarf who, if he be the same one we've heard tell of, journeyed with a certain Mr Baggins in that story that Gandalf loves to tell."

Legolas:
"Master Dwarf heed your words, for we are about to enter the home of the Elves. If you do not mind your tongure, it may be removed from your very mouth."
"I am Legolas of Mirkwood, protector of the wild and servant of the woodlands."
